1:33 p.m.: One of the infamous Pringle Cows meandered out in the ditch. One of the owners was called to collect it.
3:29 p.m.: School Patrol. Custer. You know the rest.
4:47 p.m.: An injured deer was reported on Lower French Creek Road. No injured deer were found.
5:08 p.m.: Car/deer carnage came about on Hwy. 16 near the Custer Highlands. No human injuries happened there.
8:15 p.m.: Deputies investigated a death in the west Custer area. The incident is not thought to involve foul play.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — The Custer County Sheriff’s Department was stretched to the limit, with too few deputies trying to do too much work, according to Sheriff Rick Wheeler ... Crazy Horse Memorial had thousands of trees infected with the mountain pine beetle on its 1,000 acres of land ... Bidders spent nearlly $260,000 on buffalo and burros at the Fall Classic Bison Auction, well up over the $173,690 the park received in 2009.

Ret. Col. Marty Mahrt, an accomplished U.S. Air Force pilot, was shot down and rescued in 1966 during the Vietnam War. Years later, as the war was ending in 1975, the Purple Heart winner from Custer helped evacuate the U.S. Embassy in Saigon.
A grant from the Sioux Falls-based Mary Chilton Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Foundation will help the South Dakota Air and Space Foundation preserve and tell Mahrt’s story.
