­­10 years ago, 2011 — Landover Estates held an open house to celebrate its 20 years of existence ... Cold Discovery Days returned to Custer after a successful run the previous year ... The Custer City Council discussed putting historical stamps on certain sidewalks around downtown, consisting of a short paragraph about the historical significance of the building or area near the building if the property owner wanted it.

Saturday, Feb. 6
The 911 Misdial of the Day: A child got control of a phone and dialed the emergency line. No emergency was taking place there.
12:59 a.m.: A deputy helped with an emergency medical call on north 4th Street in Custer.
6:38 a.m.: Burglar alarms blared at the Custer school compound. A deputy and a school maintenance man found the alarms to be false.

New format for Open Stage

The Valentine’s Day edition of the Hill City Arts Council Open Stage night drew a large crowd to the High Country Guest Ranch this past weekend.

The 2021 series of performances, which began in January, has a new updated format with the same welcoming vibe.

Fish is new veterans service officer

Custer has been home to Todd Fish for more than 35 years, even as he was world-hopping as a member of the U.S. Army and Reserves. But now he has finally come home to stay and recently took over the job of county veterans service officer.
After growing up in Arlington, Fish enlisted in the Army in 1984 and purchased property here the next year. His parents, David and Jean Fish, left the farm at the same time and have lived here ever since.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Custer School District was facing up to $1 million in cuts ... Lo-Ru West Dance Studio presented its presentation of “Swash Buckled” with a cast of 48 dancers ranging in age from 4 to 17 ... The county agreed to pay Scull Construction $29,520 after reaching a settlement for time lost on the renovation and expansion of the Custer County Courthouse after contamination was found in the soil in the area where the elevator shaft was being constructed.

Wednesday, Jan. 27
4:47 p.m.: A deputy and the county coroner dealt with a death on Morris Place. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
5:37 p.m.: Cows were reported out of their pasture near Custer Highlands. A possible owner was called to corral them.
7:42 p.m.: Deputies investigated a loud music complaint at a trailer park west of Custer. No loud music was heard.
Thursday, Jan. 28
1:28 a.m.: A deputy checked out an abandoned vehicle parked behind a semi-popular Custer convenience store. The derelict ride may be towed by the management.

Bingo game helps Lions Club and community

About 70 people turned out to the Boys and Girls Club in Hill City for a bingo event benefiting the Lions Club.

The Lions Club is a non-profit service organization dedicated to helping the community via various programs.

“The Lions Club has been around in Hill City for a long time,” said member Jeremy Duprey. “We look to serve the community in ways that we can.”

Duprey explained that the local chapter is part of the International Lions Club, which, according to its website, has over “48,000 Lions Clubs around the world.”
