­­10 years ago, 2010 — Over 50 percent of Custer High School students admit to using alcohol, while 40 percent say they use tobacco, according to an anonymous student survey ... A dozen Boot Hill Subdivision landowners came to Custer’s Board of Equalization hearing to object to what they said were unfair increases in their lot valuations ... Saying it was stuck between a rock and  hard place, the S.D. Public Utilities Commission voted unanimously to approve a 20 percent interim rate increase for Black Hills Power customers.

Wednesday, Feb. 26
6:03 p.m.: A deputy assisted with an emergency medical call at Aspen View Apartments in Custer. 
6:43 p.m.: Possible stranded motorist action happened on Hwy. 40 east of Hermosa. A deputy searched the area and found several abandoned vehicles, but not the one that was reported. 
7:10 p.m.: A deer attacked a car on Hwy. 16 near the Wyoming line. As there were no human injuries, charges were not filed on the deer.

California firm will turn farm wastes into natural gas

A new industry launching in South Dakota will use manure from dairy farms to generate usable natural gas, creating a new income stream for some South Dakota farmers and reducing greenhouse gas emissions along the way.

Webster named to Hall of Fame

Retired Custer High School wrestling coach and current assistant coach Alan Webster had lots to smile about at the state B wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls last weekend. Not only did his son Jared’s team come away with one state champion and one runner-up but Webster was inducted into the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. 
The honor came during an induction ceremony on Saturday just before the state finals.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — The Custer County Fair Board moved ahead with getting cost estimates for  improving the concession area in the grandstands, which was in rough shape ... A business proposal received for the Custer County Airport needed further consideration by the Custer County Commission. The proposal was from a Dell Rapids man who wanted to operate an aircraft repair business out of one of the  hangars  ... Dr. Terry Graber, physician at Regional medical clinics in Custer and Hill City, was in Haiti in January when the earthquake devastated the country.

Tuesday, Feb. 18
6:07 p.m.: A deputy did extra patrol duties at a school activity in the Custer area. 
8:03 p.m.: The motorized mayhem continued, with a vehicle blasting through a fence on 3rd Street in Custer. Thankfully, there were no injuries there. 
11:44 p.m.: The owners of one of the same vehicles from an earlier call were contacted to once again move their outfit for what was termed “snow removal operations.”

Johnson celebrates 100 years of life

Hill City has a new centenarian.

On Feb. 26, Velma Johnson turned 100 years old.

Johnson has lived in Hill City since the 1950s — 1959 to be specific.

She used to run the bus depot in town and took care of the justice of the peace, Mrs. Wedge, who had polio.

‘Heart Warrior’ Graham doing well

You’ll have to forgive Kylie Herman if she gets emotional talking about her son; the little guy has been through a lot in his first month and a half of life.
Graham Herman, whose father is 2015 Custer High School graduate Shane Herman, was born with  congenital heart disease, in which babies are born with one or more abnormalities in the heart’s structure. One of the more common birth defects, it alters the way blood flows through the heart. Defects range from simple, which might cause no problems, to complex, which can cause life-threatening complications.

It has nothing to do with brined cucumbers, but the game called pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in America among those over 50 and an enthusiastic group of players in Custer is hoping to attract more people to try the popular game.
