Girls golf qualifies for state meet

The Custer High School girls golf team is state-bound after earning second place in team scores at the region tournament in Hot Springs Monday. The top three teams advance to state, and the standings were St. Thomas More in first with a combined 402 points, Custer in second with 430 and Belle Fourche in third with 455. Rapid City Christian earned fouth with a score of 489.
“It was a good day. We were hoping for better scores, but with the conditions they played in, they did great,” said head coach Haley Uphoff.

Wildcats compete at home, head to state this week

It’s state meet time for the Custer High School track team, as those who qualified will head to Sioux Falls this weekend for the Class A State Track Meet at Howard Wood Field. The meet runs Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats will take a large contingent of athletes to the meet, many of whom are seeded highly in their respective events.
“I hope we make the podium (top six) in both the boys and the girls,” head coach Karen Karim said.

Back-to-back champs geared to tee off at state

The Hill City Rangers golf team has once again taken home the Class 6B Region championship. 
“Last  year  was the first year the  Hill City golf team took a tegion championship. Now we are back-to-back winners,” coach Josh Daiss said.
The Rangers defeated by one stroke both the Wall Eagles and the Philip Scotties,  both of whom tied for second place.
Daiss called the region competition tight and “leaps and bounds’ more challenging than the last several years of play.

Twenty-six Rangers headed to state meet

The Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took on the Last Chance Meet in Custer May 16 to improve some event times. 
“It was a pretty toned-down meet,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “We were in a really good position to not have to be overly aggressive with this meet and being able to save it for the state meet.” 
Noyes said they did not overly tax the athletes, but they did enough to tell where everyone was and where they would be at the state meet. 

’Cats win five conference titles

Five gold medals and plenty of other colors came home with the Custer High School track team from last Friday’s Black Hills Conference meet, which was moved from Rapid City Christian to O’Harra Stadium on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The move was made due to soggy conditions at Rapid City Christian.
Among the champions was Jojo Larsen, who won the 100 in school record-breaking fashion at a time of 12.21. She followed that up by also winning the 200 in a time of 26.29.

Rangers dance with Eagles at Belle Fourche

The Rangers golf team played two tournaments this week, taking first on May 10 at the Belle Fourche Country Club for the Marjean Huber Memorial Tournament hosted by Bison.
The Rangers captured the team title by edging out the Wall Eagles by one stroke with a team total of 265. Individually, Zane Messick carded an 83 and a fourth-place finish. Leo Daiss followed in fifth, firing an 86. Breylon Rahn shot a 96 and Adolph Tyler followed closely with a 97.   

Rangers all-conference in every event group

At the Black Hills Conference Track and Field Championships May 10, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team had boys and girls place all- conference in every event group. Overall, the girls scored 68 points, and the boys scored 102 points. 
Head coach Joe Noyes said, “It was the most points we had scored on the girls side and the boys side.”
In the 200, Caleb Sobolik placed eighth at 24.02. Then, in the 800, Brandon Escalante won with a state-leading time. 

Golfers third at Black Hills Conference

The Custer girls golfers teed off at the Hart Ranch Golf Course Monday for the Black Hills Conference Tournament. All told, the team earned third place with combined score of 425, behind Spearfish (378) and St. Thomas More (365). Also placing was Belle Fourche with 457 and Rapid City Christian with 500.
“I’m really proud of them  as a  team,” said head coach Haley Uphoff. Uphoff said she thought the team did well in the tournament and that it is working on chipping and putting on the well-maintained and therefore faster greens.

Wildcat track travels to Howard Wood

It was a busy week for the Custer High School track team last week, as Wildcats competed in the rescheduled Black Hills Classic Meet in Sturgis, the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invitational and the Howard Wood Dakota Relays.
Howard Wood is by far the biggest meet the Wildcats compete in during the course of the year, as schools of all sizes from several states converge on Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls for the meet.

Rangers break school records

Although the Discount Fuel/Gas and Go High School Invitational in Kadoka was canceled due to cold and rainy weather, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took advantage of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays by breaking multiple school records.
“We had a really nice weekend at Howard Wood and had a lot of good things happen,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “That’s a two-day meet that’s kind of our premier meet of the season before state. It’s tough to get in. Kids have to run a qualifying time, or as a relay, you have to be in the top 24 of Class A to get in.”
