The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team rolled past New Underwood defeating them easily with a score of 69-42.
This leaves the Rangers undefeated at 3-0 for the season.
Head coach Laramie Harvey said the boys won despite not coming ready to play and coming in overconfident. He said  the team did a better job playing as a team in the second half, which helped to lead to the win.
Defense, he said, has been key to the wins the boys have been securing, evident during the second half of the New Underwood game. The team has a new coach who is helping lead the Rangers to a new way to play.
“Coach Messick is new to our program and with him comes extensive knowledge and experience,” Harvey said. “Coach Messick is a great defensive coach. He is teaching us a different way to play defense than we have been playing the last few years.”
Harvey adds that there are “growing pains” with learning something new but notes the second half of the New Underwood win was a great testimony of what the boys are learning from coach Messick  that “helped us pull away.”
“There are glimpses of us becoming a team, and those glimpses have helped us come away with wins in the first few games,” Harvey said.
He says his team goal is to, “get a little better every day and by season’s end we hope to be closer to our ceiling.”
The boys have a week off and play again Jan. 3 on the road against the West Central Trojans (2-0) with varsity play beginning at 5 p.m.
