With the Mid Dakota Monster looming in the distance, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School boys wrestling team took on the Winner Triangular Jan. 8 with duals against Chamberlain and Winner.
In the dual against Chamberlain, Custer squeaked out a win, 42-38.
Head coach Jared Webster said, “Some of us came out and wrestled, and some of us didn’t. The goal is to always have everybody step on the mat ready to wrestle, and we weren’t on that one.”
However, he said it was nice to walk away with a win.
In their respective weight classes (WC), Wildcats Cole Scott (106), Myles Woodward (113) and Relic Bailey (120) won by forfeit.

The next day, the Wildcats prepared to face the Monster at Lyman High School in Presho, S.D. As a team, the Wildcats placed 10th.
“The kids wrestled well. We’ve still got a lot of stuff to work on, but performance-wise, the kids are right there, and that’s a tough tournament,” said Webster. “Anytime you place at that one, it’s good.”
Webster said he always tries to set the bar a little high, so the team is not where he wants to see them yet. Nevertheless, he did see improvement this week and wants to see more next week.

After that, the Wildcats are heading to the Philip Invitational Boys Tournament Jan. 16 and the Black Hills Conference at Spearfish Jan. 17.
“The Philip Tournament, we’ll get a lot of those younger kids a lot of matches, which will be great. And the Black Hills Conference, a lot of teams are very solid this year, so that’s going to be fun to see what happens,” said Webster.
Webster said the Black Hills Conference was moved to the middle of the season a few years back. This allows the athletes the opportunity to compete in the conference tournament and rest before regions.
