Tanner Davis took second place at this weekend’s Black Hills Classic Wrestling Tournament in Hill City.
“It was a bittersweet taste wrestling at home,” said Davis.“ I was so excited yet sad knowing it’s my last time wrestling on the Smokey mat!”
All of Davis’ wins occurred in the first period. Davis began the day beating Noah Lauen of Rapid City. Davis pinned Kagan Lawrence of Hulett, Wyo., in 1:51 minutes into the first period to advance. Davis  then defeated Herman Frisvold of Lemmon-McIntosh in 45 seconds before advancing to the finals, where he faced Josh Womack of Newcastle-Upton, Wyo. Womack defeated  Davis  in a 3-1 decision.
“It was a lot of fun,” Davis commented. “But it’s definitely frustrating being in the close matches and not being able to come on top and to lose in front of my home crowd.”
Always optimistic, though, Davis knows, “I can only learn and get better when I wrestle those tough matches so I really like them!”
Hill City had three wrestlers take to the mats including eighth grader David Gomez and junior Eli Isakson, who defeated Brody Thompson of Rapid City and placed  eighth in his bracket. The team scored 24 points.
