Dennis Bohr

Dennis John Bohr was the first baby born  Christmas day in the new Huron (S.D.) Hospital, Dec. 25, 1947. He was the first child born to Donald and Mary (Lusk) Bohr.
He grew up on the family farm and attended all eight grades at Grafton Country School in Miner County, S.D.
He enjoyed trapping and riding his horse, which he sometimes rode to the country school. He was active in 4-H showing horses and cattle.
The family moved to Wessington, S.D. in 1961, where he graduated from Wessington High School. Dennis loved music and was a member of a local band called Pat’s Cats.
After graduation Dennis worked for Boeing Aircraft in Spokane, Wash. He enlisted in the U.S, Air Force in 1967 and served his country for four years at Alconbury Air Force in Alconbury, England, and Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb. While he was enlisted Dennis married Nancy Mitchell June 16, 1967, and they have three children—Shannon Marie, Donovan James and Lucas John.
Dennis farmed north of Wessington, was a salesman for Huron Drilling and owned and operated Wessington Livestock Supply. While living in Wessington he was one of the founders of the Wessington Area Jaycees and served on many committees benefiting the community, specifically youth gun safety.
He began his trucking career in 1982. Dennis married Sandra Clark Dec. 21, 1996. In 2011 he and Sandra started their own company called SanDen, Inc., traveling together across the United States.
Dennis had a passion for guns and safe hunting. As a gunsmith, he sold and repaired guns retiring from business in 2022. One of Dennis’s dreams was to live in the Black Hills of South Dakota and he and Sandra made their home in the Custer and Hot Springs area.
Dennis was an avid outdoorsman and horseman. He was an active 4-H dad guiding his children through the various projects, particularly the horse project. He had an early rodeo career when he rode saddle broncs and roped calves in SDRA rodeos. He enjoyed hunting pheasants, elk, bear, deer and antelope with his family and friends. Dennis particularly enjoyed hunting with his sons in the Black Hills.
He belonged to the Watson-Krauter Post No. 110 American Legion and the Fall River Gun Club. Dennis was true to his country and every morning and evening, you could see him hanging and lowering the United States flag when he was home. He loved living in the Black Hills with his wife, Sandra, where they resided in Hot Springs.
Dennis passed away peacefully with his family by his side Aug. 31, 2023. He was 75.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mary Bohr; and one great-grandchild, Nova Skye Waterman.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Shannon (Tony) Waterman of Tea, S.D., Donovan Bohr of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Lucas Bohr of Milford, Conn.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Lou (Ken) McGirr of Huron, Stephen (Randi) Bohr of Holdrege, Neb., Jean (Jeff) Larson of Huron, Laurel (Rocky) Alvarez of Sturgis, S.D., and Lesa (Glenn) Rowen of Wessington; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dennis’s Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Chamberlain-McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs. Private committal services will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
