The awardees for Custer School District’s educators of the year were recently announced for each building in the district.
For Custer Elementary School, second grade teacher Elizabeth Gangel was awarded.
In the Custer Jr./Sr. High School, the award went to Slade Swedlund, the Industrial Tech teacher.
In Hermosa, Carianna Anderson, a special education teacher, was awarded.
Anderson, who has been working with kids for over 17 years, and in Hermosa for 7 years, said that it is “an honor” to be recognized as Educator of the Year.
“I challenge myself to focus every day on the success of my students and coworkers as number one priority. It’s an extremely rewarding career, and I am humbled by the opportunity to work with so many great educators in our district,” said Anderson.
Anderson worked at STAR Academy with troubled youth for 10 years and loves working with students who have learning struggles.
‘I want my students to learn that no mater what,  they deserve to be successful and feel worthy doing so. I want to teach them the skills they need and how to be resilient so they can grow and be a positive part of society,” said Anderson.
Gangel is finishing her 13th year as an educator and fourth year in Custer School District.
“In my classroom, students become a family. We treat each other with respect, we ask forgiveness when we make mistakes, we forgive when forgiveness is asked, we are kind to each other, we help each other, and we lift each other up,” said Gangel.
As for what she hopes her students learn form her, she said, “I hope my students develop a love of learning and a curiosity that creates a desire to always be learning.”
“I am honored and humbled to receive this recognition.” said Gangel.
