Dorothy Hoxeng
Dorothy Hoxeng was born Nov. 15, 1928, to Ralph and Sallie Dickey of Altheimer, Ark. After college, she worked as a secretary to a general at the Pine Bluff Arsenal.
She met soldier Ken Hoxeng and they married in 1954, moved to a farm near Volin, S.D., and had four children. They were later divorced.
The family moved to Armour, S.D., in 1969, spending many years working and volunteering there. In 2015, Dot moved to Custer, S.D., to be near family. Family was her greatest joy and she frequently would say how lucky she was to live near her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Despite being in South Dakota for 70 years, Dot never lost her southern accent and was a gracious Southern lady to the end of her life.
Dot died Oct. 15, 2024, at Monument Health Custer Hospital. She was 95.
She is survived by her four children, Jim Hoxeng, Mary (Charlie) Myers of Custer, Kass (Barry) Rempp of Custer and John (Sonja Prince) Hoxeng of Bellingham, Wash.; four grandchildren, Laura Myers of Custer, Franny Myers of Rapid City, S.D., and Sallie Myers (Aaron Pierce) and Grace Rempp of Omaha, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Lola and Elliott Weeks of Custer; and her dear friends, Sateera Thompsen of Custer and Sara Tall of Hastings, Neb.
A celebration of life was held at Custer Community Church Oct. 21. Interment will occur in Armour at a later date.
Memorials may be sent to Custer Community Church.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
