Cody McCracken was sworn-in as an officer of the Rapid City Police Department. McCracken graduated from Hill City High School in 2009. Although he moved around, McCracken said Hill City is the only town where he felt he belonged. Thus, even though he was going to be busy with training, he was glad to be close enough to the Hill City area to enjoy all that it has to offer.
 
 
10 YEARS AGO, 2012
— Nature in all its glory was on display at the Boys and Girls Club of the Black Hills in Hill City when the Evergreen Garden Club hosted its annual Alice Smith Flower Show. Many exhibitors brought plants of all kinds, tended through the summer, in preparation for the “Summer Extravaganza” show. According to Merlene Broer, there were 120 entries, up from last year’s show. Doug Hesnard and Cathie Draine were back to judge the show, carefully examining each display, giving helpful comments to those who were watching. Sometimes they even joked about the beauty of items they wished they could slip into their van to take with them. But after the judging was complete, all the entries remained intact for the public to enjoy for the rest of the day.
 
 
15 YEARS AGO, 2007
— The Black Hills Playhouse offered a musical treat for ages 4 to 104, “A Year with Frog and Toad” by Robert Reale and Willie Reale, a story of two best friends and their adventures through the seasons of the year.  Based on the well-known “Frog and Toad” books by Arnold Lobel, it was nominated for Broadway’s prestigious Tony Award. Nancy Halverson provided the leadership for the cast as this was her directing debut at the Playhouse.
 
 
20 Years Ago, 2002
— Hill City’s Iron Horse Rodeo offered bikers and audiences more of the motorcycle experience. It showcased a variety of high-skill motorcycle acrobats and tricks. Skip Nutting, a founding member of this rodeo, decided to begin the Iron Horse Rodeo after falling in love with the Hill City area. He was originally from California and would ride his Harley out here for the Rally …
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program named Margaret Rossknecht of Rapid City its “Volunteer of the Year” at its 29th Annual Recognition Dinner.   Margaret has been actively volunteering for more than six years and volunteering an average of 140 hours each month at many places. Margaret is the mother of Ron Rossknecht of Hill City and owner of Rossknecht Appraisal Services in Hill City.
 
 
25 Years ago, 1997
— Ironwood Gallery on Hill City’s Main Street was robbed at gunpoint around 2:45 p.m. A lone male entered the store during a heavy rain, pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money. No one was hurt in the incident.  Usually the street is swarming with visitors but because of the intense rain, the streets were almost deserted and there were few witnesses.
 
 
30 Years ago, 1992
—First Western Bank in Hill City was held up at gunpoint on Friday, July 31, for the second time during this summer but this time the robber was caught. A business owner was in the bank at the time and followed the thief out and identified the vehicle to police when they arrived. Douglas A. Bourne, 26, from Rapid City was charged with the robbery. Wilmetta Johnson reported her friend Bill Anderson who taught at Lapeer, Mich., visited them and Bill continues publishing his extensive research work on the Ingalls family and “Little House” books.

— John Wayne visited Hill City — no wait — that’s Jerry Thomas, a John Wayne look-a-like from Eagan, Minn. Thomas travels the country, portraying the late movie great, John Wayne. Thomas bears an uncanny likeness to the entertainer from his younger movie days, even down to the smile, voice and walk. He visited several tourist spots in the Black Hills ... Brandi Renae Swanson was born to Guy and Andra Swanson. She weighed six pounds, 9-1/2 ounces and was 19 inches long ...

Evergreen Garden Club held its annual Flower Show at the Hill City Senior Citizen’s Center and the building was filled with beautiful displays and flower arrangements. Organizing the show were Lavilla Willett and Denise Etzkorn. Named as recipient of the “Best of Show” purple ribbon was Bonnie Stam with her “Rainbow of Dreams.”

Mrs. Melonie Stark of North Dakota and Mrs. Vanessa Klich of Huron took their grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Bush, to Los Angeles where she was to depart for her home in Minyip, Australia, after an extended visit with her daughter Mrs. Archie Clausen. Mrs. Stark and Mrs. Klich spent a few days on the West Coast visiting their aunt, Mrs. Walt Harms, of Bakersfield, Calif.
 
 
45 Years Ago, 1977
— The Hill City Town Board hired a second policeman to aid Chuck White. Jeff Waldhalm of Rapid City was to help relieve the 24-hour-a-day duty which a single policeman must fill. The board called for a more strict enforcement of existing town ordinances with two men on the force.  Waldhalm had to be on the job for six months before becoming permanently employed.
