The Hill City Parent Involvement Parent Teacher Organization (PIPTO) is once again sponsoring the annual all-school science fair, taking place March 13 in the Bob Burden Gym.
Students in all grades are encouraged to participate. Most entries come from the elementary level where fifth grade participation is mandatory. Middle and high school students may participate voluntarily and are eligible to receive extra credit. However, according to the registration packet, the ultimate goal is simple: have fun with science.
PIPTO chair and science fair committee member Yvette Running Horse Collin said the science fair, “helps our students gain confidence and understand that everyone can be a scientist.”
She added, “Some of the most important inventions throughout history have come from someone asking a question, testing their idea to see what happens and bringing their discovery forward for the benefit of their community.”
New this year, PIPTO is offering an after-school science academy in the STEM room of the High School on several dates leading up to the science fair. Students who would like additional help preparing their project are encouraged to attend.
“Whether it is helping them to formulate their project question, helping them with the supplies they need to do the experiment or create their display board or helping with their data analysis, we have a team of parents and teachers (our science fair committee) willing to offer their support and guidance,” said Running Horse Collin.
The committee will provide materials such as poster board, markers, paper, printer access, along with other supplies, as well as snacks and beverages.
Students are given space to research, plan, create and store their experiments and will be offered guidance on how to do an experiment, how to create their boards and how to measure and address their hypotheses.
This year’s guest speaker is South Dakota Public (SDPB) Science Steve, who will present to students during the school day March 13.
