In a repeat of last year’s opener, the Hill City girls basketball team fell to Red Cloud by a score of 60-41. The Rangers have been opening against the Lady Crusaders for a few years.
“The last five years I’ve been at Hill City we have opened with Red Cloud,” said head coach Wade Ginsbach. “There is no way you can prepare for the pressure they can apply defensively for 32 minutes.”
Ginsbach was pleased with the team saying, “overall, I’m happy with the effort our girls gave all night and look forward to getting back in the gym and continuing to improve.”
He notes that early season is a time to figure out what works and doesn’t.
“Just like any game at the beginning of the year it’s a good indicator of what kind of team you are going to have, as well as determining what you need to emphasize moving forward,” he said. “We did a lot of things well that we can build on moving forward.”
Ginsbach said the team did  a “good job attacking the rim early and got a few of their players in foul trouble early, leading to us getting to the free throw line 17 times in the first half.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of the team’s defense.
“We also were able to do some things defensively by creating 30 turnovers on the night,” he said.
The girls will now face New Underwood, which is 1-1 on the season. Varsity play takes place at home  Dec. 15 at 6 p.m.
