Hill City celebrates the class of 2026

Hill City High School will host its 105th commencement ceremony Sunday, May 17, honoring the class of 2026 at Mount Rushmore National Memorial Amphitheater, a privilege unique to the district. 

Born decades ago, the tradition continues as 40 graduates will receive their diplomas at the nation’s Shrine of Democracy. 

This year’s valedictorian is Jordan Duprey, who was recently honored at the 36th annual Academic Excellence Recognition luncheon for her academic achievements, identified as the top 1 percent of the graduating class in the state. 

“Being in the top one percent of your class is truly remarkable,” said Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen at the luncheon. 

Dacey Williams is this year’s salutatorian. Both Duprey and Williams will speak at the ceremonies along with the guest speaker, retired South Dakota Supreme Justice Janine Kern.  

Kern was appointed to the South Dakota Supreme Court in 2014 by Gov. Dennis Dauguard to represent the First Supreme Court District, which includes Custer, Lawerence, Meade and Pennington counties. She previously served as circuit court judge for 18 years. Kern retired from the bench in December of last year.

This year’s graduating class chose the white Lily as their class flower and “Kids” by MGMT as their class song.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m.
