Hill City School District features teacher Jennifer Martius

What grade/subject do you teach? 

English as a Second Language, 7th grade Geography, and 7th grade Spanish

 

Where did you grow up and where did you go to college? 

I grew up in Hill City.  I originally completed an Accounting degree in Vermillion at University of South Dakota.  

Then I went back to school and received my teaching degree from Black Hills State University.

 

How long have you been a teacher? 

This will be my 17th year teaching.

 

Why did you become a teacher? 

I had had an interest in teaching since 4th grade. An opportunity for a translator came up in Hill City and I was excited to use my Spanish, so I applied.  

I also liked how the schedule allowed me to be there for my kids.  The rest is history!

 

What do you love about teaching?

I love the small, supportive community. I went to school here and I love the small-school environment where you know the students and can make connections.

 

Would you like to share any personal info about coaching, family, pets?

I have three kids, two of which just graduated college and have started their adult lives. My third is a senior, here, at Hill City.  

I enjoy the outdoors and walking. I also enjoy reading and playing the piano. I enjoy sports as well, and like all kinds of music. I have a dog, who is my new baby.
