Historical society meeting date changed

Lois wells will discuss epidemics throughout the ares at the Saturday, April 10 meeting of the Custer Historical Society scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Pine Room.
In May 2020 Wells had an interview fromo KOTA of a 1948 Sturgis High School graduate who had not been allowed to have a traditional graduation ceremony because of the polio epidemic. The interview was on the same weekend that the 2020 Custer High School graduates had to find a non-traditional way of celebration.
Because Wells had taught in Lennox, a hot spot for polio both in 1948 and 1952, she had become interested in the subject, talked to many polio survivors and had written articles in 1990 on polio, a source for the main part of this talk. The presentation was first given at the 2020 Western History Conference.
A Lennox man had even been born inside an iron lung, his mother dying a year later inside that same iron lung.
John VanDis of Custer will assist with the presentation.
The top has been expanded to include the flu of 1918, compared often with our current pandemic.
The Custer Historical Society meets most first Saturdays each month. The public is welcome to attend.
