Jim Coffin
Jim Coffin was born in 1931 to Marie and Harry Coffin and grew up on their ranch near Trail City, S.D.
He was the eighth child in a family with 12 children. After graduation from Mobridge (S.D.) High School, he volunteered for the U.S. Air Force where he served in France during the Korean War. Upon returning to the U.S., he worked as a postal employee in Oregon and then moved to California where he spent many years of his life.
In 1977 he moved to Custer, S.D., with his wife Maggie and son Marti and worked at the Youth Forestry Camp in Custer State Park. The family were members of the Custer Lutheran Fellowship.
They returned to California in 1985, and he and Maggie eventually moved to Missouri where he built a log home. The couple resided in California for his last years, starting in 2014.
Jim, formerly of Custer, died May, 2, 2021, in Oceanside Calif. He was 89.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marie; brothers, Roger, Jerry, Howard, John, Roy and Zane; and sister, June.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie; daughters, Janelle Skibicki and Johlene Jacobi and their spouses; son, Martin Matulis Coffin; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Grant; sisters, Jean, Lorane and Mary will also miss him, as well as his many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held June 12 at the North Coast United Methodist Church in Oceanside.
