John ‘Frank’ Swindall III

John “Frank” Swindal III was born Dec. 23, 1954, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Frank and Jean Swindal.
Within a year of his birth they moved to Coral Gables, Fla., where he lived until he moved to Custer, S.D.
Growing up in Florida Frank enjoyed the outdoors, especially water sports, swimming, boating and fishing due to his closeness to the ocean. After high school he went on adventures in his VW bus. He then went on to manage the family whole furniture business with his brother, Ken for 25 years.
He met his wife, Susan Estes, in 1994 in Orlando, Fla. After a whirlwind romance, they were married May 6, 1995. It landed on Derby day and from that day forward they celebrated by watching the Kentucky Derby.
After the family business closed, Frank and Susan decided to leave the big city. They found the Roost Resort and the Black Hills of South Dakota. They owned the business from 2005 until 2018, running it together.
Frank became a “mountain man.” Most people were surprised when they found out he moved from Florida. He loved Custer and the Black Hills. He enjoyed his time at the Roost, all the folks he met at the resort whom now he would call friend.  He cherished all the friendships he made over the 16 plus years in Custer.
Frank passed away at Monument Health Hospital, Custer July 7, 2021. He was 66.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, George and Jerry Estes; brother, Rick Swindal; and his fur babies, Molly, Maggie and Dixielou.
Frank is survived by his wife, Susan; brother, Ken Swindall; sisters in law, Diane Mewes and Sabine Swindall; brother in law, Eddie Estes and many nieces and nephews.
Frank has been cremated, flanked by his “girls” Molly and Maggie and no services will be held.
