Leo Volin

Leo Flynn Volin was born April 27, 1961, in Ekalaka, Mont., to Charles (Toots) and Delores (Peggy) Volin. He was the youngest of five children. That same year, the Volin family moved from their Homestead ranch by the Little Missouri River near Camp Crook, S.D., to the big city of Rapid City, S.D.
Leo attended Stevens High School where he was involved in several sports. He started on varsity football his freshman year. He held the state track pole vault record at 13’9” for several years. He graduated in 1980. After high school, he worked several construction jobs and ultimately became a journeyman plumber.
In 1982 he married his high school sweetheart, Tina Ohlsen. With this union came two children, Samantha and Chase.
As a family, they spent many weekends at Sheridan Lake camping. He was very passionate about hunting, water skiing, painting, fishing, wood carving and spending time with family. He will always be remembered for his detailed stories and life experiences.
He was a proud father. He loved seeing Samantha’s success in art and enjoyed their rock hunting adventures. He enjoyed hunting and watching movies with Chase. He was thankful for the times that he was able to spend with his grand children.
In 2012 Leo moved to Custer, S.D., where he spent his remaining years by the creek with his partner/girlfriend, Sher Johnson. They created a special place to bring friends and family together. Leo will be dearly missed.
Leo, of Custer, passed away Dec. 3, 2024. He was 63.
Leo was preceeded in death by his parents; sisters, Connie Baertsch and Lynda Reed; brother, Chuck Volin; sister in law, Shelley Volin; brother-in-law, Dave Hunsaker; and nephews, Scott Baertsch and Jacob Volin.
Survivors include his sister, Dixie Hunsaker; son, Chase (Kelly) Volin; daughter, Samantha Briegel; two grandchildren, Noah and Alyna Volin; Partner/girlfriend, Sher; and many other friends and family.
Memorial services were  Dec. 7 at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
