Library opens food pantry

The Custer County Library has launched a new food pantry in partnership with the Storehouse, expanding access to food for local children and families.
Located inside the library, the new pantry shelf is part of the Storehouse’s ongoing mission to prioritize food security for youth in the area. With several active distribution sites, including summer sack lunches at the Custer YMCA, the Buffalo Gap Food Pantry, the Wildcat Pantry with the Custer School District, and holiday programs like Christmas dinner baskets and coat drives, the Storehouse continues to address critical needs across the county.
The summer lunch program, a cornerstone of the Storehouse’s outreach since 2009, was first developed in collaboration with then-library director Marguerite Cullum. Today, that legacy continues under current library director Sarah Myers, who initiated the new in-library food shelf as another way to support families right where they are.
“Our goal is always to be helpful,” said Myers. “When we see a need in the community, we try to find a practical way to respond.”
Accessible during regular library hours, the food pantry is stocked with ready-to-eat items and nonperishable staples. It is open to anyone in need, with no questions asked.
The library is proud to be one of the Storehouse’s many distribution sites, and community support is essential to keeping the pantry stocked and sustainable. While the library cannot accept food donations directly, those who wish to help can contribute by donating to the Storehouse.
Financial contributions, whether cash or check, can be dropped off at the Storehouse or mailed. Checks should be made payable to The Storehouse with “Library Pantry” written in the memo line to ensure funds are directed to this specific effort.
This new addition aligns to the Custer County Library’s mission to continually meet the needs of our community.
