After experiencing the benefits of Pulse Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy firsthand, Pete and Alisha Kolb of Hill City felt called to make the innovative wellness therapy available to others. In early March, the couple opened Healthy Roots Wellness Studio in Rapid City.
Their journey with PEMF began after their son, Karson, suffered a football injury. A neighbor offered the family the use of their personal PEMF machine.
“She said, ‘Have him come use this. He will heal so much faster and get back on the field,’” said Alisha. “So we started learning about what it was.”
At its core, PEMF therapy stimulates the body’s electrical and chemical processes. The machines send gentle, low-frequency electromagnetic waves deep into the body, where the pulses interact with charged particles in the cells to support the body’s natural healing processes, reduce inflammation and improve circulation.
Electromagnetic pulses essentially prompt the cell to repair itself, relax blood vessels to improve circulation and alter the electrochemical reactions in nerve and muscle tissue to help relieve pain, decrease swelling and prevent muscle spasms.
“What it’s doing is just supporting the body, so the body can do what it already knows how to do,” said Alisha.
Alisha compared the technology to a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit but shared PEMF therapy works much deeper and is a full-body therapy not limited to a specific area.
“It goes way deeper into your body, into the cellular level, to promote your cells to be optimized,” she said. “Then, they can go to your body where you need repair or recovery.”
She added that PEMF technology is FDA approved for certain bone-healing applications.
“People are utilizing it to support conditions like osteoporosis to help regrow bone or to help with bone injuries like breaks and fractures.”
Alisha also recommends using the therapy both before and after surgery.
“It’s pushing blood flow at a higher rate, pushing oxygen to the tissues in your body, pushing out inflammation at the same time, so it will prep that area to be the healthiest it can be for the surgery process.”
Following surgery on her ankle in February, Beth Kenaston has been doing PEMF therapy at Healthy Roots and believes the therapy is helping.
“I’ve been going in due to some severe swelling in my ankle from a surgery I had in February. This has helped significantly with my pain and swelling,” Kenaston said. “Pete and Alisha are doing a great job bringing alternative treatment options to the area.”
The therapy is also reported to improve inflammation and pain.
“It’s really helpful from a pain management standpoint,” said Alisha. “Things like arthritis in general, it’s just inflammation in your body but it causes a lot of pain.”
PEMF therapy may also benefit those experiencing poor circulation.
“I was looking for something to help improve my blood circulation and overall wellness when I heard from Pete and Alisha about their new PEMF therapy venture,” said Travis Santistevan. “The experience was great—I could feel my body responding and simply feeling better. Since starting PEMF therapy, I’ve noticed improved circulation, fewer issues with cold feet and less overall fatigue. I feel more energized and comfortable throughout the day.”
According to Alisha, PEMF therapy has a wide range of potential wellness applications.
“There really isn’t anything that it doesn’t help with,” she said.
She says clients have sought PEMF therapy for concerns ranging from brain health and stress to depression and circadian rhythm regulation.
“Most people notice better sleep almost immediately,” Alisha said.
Alisha has spent 26 years working in healthcare and centers herself around wellness and natural healing. Pete spent more than 30 years in sales and serves on the Hill City Volunteer Fire Department. Together, the couple have become deeply interested in the potential of PEMF therapy and committed themselves to learning how to maximize its benefits for the physical wellness, mental well-being and overall body balance of their clients.
They’ve founded Healthy Roots Wellness Studio with a shared mission, “to provide a welcoming environment where people can explore innovative wellness therapy that compliments their health journey naturally,” according to the studio’s website.
“We have lots of Hill City people coming to see us, which is great,” said Alisha, who hopes to someday be able to bring their services directly to the Hill City community.
Healthy Roots Wellness Studio is located on Fulton Street off Jackson Boulevard in Rapid City.
To introduce new clients to PEMF therapy, the studio offering three one-hour sessions for $99.
“We really want to give people a fair experience to see if they are noticing a difference,” said Alisha. “After that, you can either do single sessions, or we have packages that are discounted.”
Sessions are available by appointment only and can be booked online at healthyrootswellnessstu
