Paint with PIPTO at Family Fun Night

Roll up your sleeves. It’s about to get messy—and fun—at this year’s art-inspired Family Fun Night Jan. 30 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria gym, sponsored by Parent Involvement Parent Teacher Organization (PIPTO).
Guests are encouraged to dress for the occasion and wear something they won’t mind leaving a little more “colorful” than when they arrived.
This year PIPTO team collaborated with the high school art club, led by teacher Jessica Kautz, to create an experience that kids just don’t typically get in school or at home.
“Generally, because it is too messy,” said PIPTO member Cassandra Ott.
The event will feature six hands-on stations, each showcasing a different painting technique: from paint pouring to a mega hand-print mural in paint-by-number style where artists will use their hands instead of brushes.
“You use your hand to dip into a certain color, and then whatever color you choose, it dictates where you put it on the paint-by-number,” Ott said. “Everyone will get to participate.”
Other creative options include famous artist-inspired stations such as a Bob Ross paint along—a local scene of “happy little trees” and a Jackson Pollock-style action painting experience.
“Jackson Pollock was famous for just throwing paint around. So they’ll be using sponges and random other items, dunking them in paint and then throwing them at a canvas,” Ott said.
“Even a rubber chicken will be involved,” added Kautz.
Families will also be able to try printmaking using a printing press in both linocut and styrofoam prints.
For those who prefer a less adventurous activity, there will be a friendship bracelet making station.
The event is free to attend and artists will be able to take home their masterpieces.
“The (art club) students are really excited to share their love of art with the littles and show off the creativity happening in our school,” Kautz said.
Organizers emphasize the importance of wearing clothing that can get a little—or a lot—messy.
