The Hill City High School Rangers golf team took home its first invitational win at the Philip Scottie Invite April 25. The boys left Hill City with snow on the ground, but coach Josh Daiss said the  “temperatures were slightly warmer on the prairie.”
Daiss said the golfers fought a strong field of 16 teams, scoring a team total of 244. Three teams, including the Wall Eagles, were just four strokes behind the Rangers.
Individually, Zane Messick led the Rangers with a 77, tying for third place overall. Leo Daiss and Breylon Rahn finished just one stroke apart, at 83 and 84 respectively, while Adolph Tyler rounded out the Ranger foursome with a 90.
“Messick really battled,” said Daiss. “After starting his tournament with a few rough holes, he was able to grind back for a nice round and individual finish.”
Daiss said the course in Philip “has the potential for big scores with a lot of out of bounds in play” which many golfers fell prey to during the invitational.
The team is excited by the win, and Daiss is optimistic that there are more wins for the Rangers this season.
“We have been talking about our on-course management as a team and playing the proper shot for the situation and will continue that process,” Daiss said.
The Rangers take to the greens again May 1 for the previously postponed Elks Invite at the Elks Golf Course in Rapid City.
