After a short break, the Hill City High School boys basketball team headed for regional games. The first Region 8A basketball game was held on Mar. 1 at Belle Fourche High School as the Ranger boys faced off against the Broncs.
Although the Ranger boys had some losses in the previous games, they were ready. The game as a whole was very close. The Rangers were down by 10 in the first quarter. However, “Our boys to their credit just grinded out the rest of the game,” said coach Laramie Harvey.
The Ranger boys gave their all to creep up on the scoreboard. Harvey was especially proud of the way they handled and carried themselves throughout the game. In the end, the Ranger boys won 58-56.
“The Belle Fourche game was a great game for the boys to see how they’ve grown both as a team and in some cases individually,” Harvey said.
After the victory the Ranger boys traveled to Rapid City Christian School Mar. 4 for their second regional game against the Comets. The Comets got a decent lead in the beginning, but the Ranger boys worked to close the gap.
In the second half of the game, the Comets struck hard and took a big lead in the third quarter. After that, it was difficult for the Ranger boys to regain their footing. The Comets won 77-60. Nevertheless, Harvey said “Our boys worked extremely hard.”
Five seniors will be moving on this year.
“They’ll be missed,” said Harvey, “but we also have a lot of upcoming younger kids that are I think ready to step in.”
When reflecting on the highlights of the season and the team as a whole, Harvey said,  “I feel they grew as young men off of the court, and for that I’m proud.”
