The Hill City Rangers girls basketball team is gearing up for the 2025-26 season that officially started Nov. 24.
The Rangers return a solid line-up, graduating only two seniors last year. With a largely upperclassmen roster, eight seniors and one junior, head coach Anna Eckert expects strong leadership.
Eckert said, “Many of them stepped up this season,” taking advantage of open gyms and various camp opportunities.
Last season the Rangers fell in the Region 8A semifinals game to St. Thomas More, ending their run at the SoDak 16 with a 9-13 record.
“We have some really good teams that we get to go up against this year,” said Eckert. “We play the top two teams in the state-Sioux Falls Christian, who got first last year, and Mahpiya Luta, who lost by one to Sioux Falls Christian in the championship. Throw in Rapid City Christian and St. Thomas More, and we will have some good competition this season.”
Eckert’s expectations for the season revolve around the team putting in the work and finding their grit.
“I’m excited for this season,” said Eckert. “It’s another great group of girls this year. We have to understand that basketball is a process, but if we can grow a little grit and confidence—through hard practices, tough-teachable moments and choosing to work hard every practice—it could be a really fun season.”
The Rangers open their season at home against the Hot Springs Bison Dec. 8 at 7 p.m.
