With a team score of 232, the Hill City Rangers squeaked into first place by one stroke over Philip at the Elks Challenge, hosted by the Wall Eagles, in Rapid City April 30.
“I was visiting with coach Haynes of Philip and coach Walker from Wall about how competitive Region 6 is this year, and it showed today,” said coach Josh Daiss. “We were able to get the best of both of those teams today and will have to continue to play at a high level to hold them off for the rest of the season.”
Breylon Rahn took home his consecutive second place win with a one over par 73, just missing first place by one stroke.
“Brey consistently keeps playing well and putting himself in position for that top spot,” said Daiss.
Zane Messick finished four above par with a 76 and a fourth-place finish.
“Zane was playing from behind after a tough opening hole but put together a really nice round overall,” added Daiss.
Leyton Thayer shot an 83.
“I was also super proud of Leyton today. He took a big number on his 15th hole but was able to battle back and played the last three holes in one under knowing we needed a good finish for the team standing,” said Daiss.
Colt Eckert was just a stroke behind at 84 finishing 13th. Max Rupert carded a 90, and Blake Winter tallied a 93 overall.
The Rangers have a busy week ahead as they travel to Martin for the Bennett County Invite Tuesday, May 6 and are in Ft. Pierre Friday, May 8 for the Stanley Coounty Invite, then host the Black Hill Classic at Hart Ranch Monday, May 11.
