It was another busy week for the Hill City High School Rangers golf team.
The team traveled to Martin for the Bennett County Invitational May 6 and took home a first place win with a team total of 243.
Individually, Zane Messick played his best round of high school competition, according to coach Josh Daiss. Messick took home a medal finishing just one over par with a score of 73. Breylon Rahn scored an 84 and Leo Daiss followed with an 86. Adolph Tyler fired a 90, and Max Rupert rounded out the scoring with a 95.
On May 9 the Rangers traveled to Fort Pierre for the Stanley County Invitational, where they took first place once again. Messick was again the team leader, finishing one over par with a 64. Messick took second place overall. Rahn finished in fifth with a 69 followed by Daiss in eighth with a 70 total. Tyler scored a 72, while Rupert shot a 78.
“The Dunes Course is fun to play as it is half par threes and half par fours. It allows us to work on the short game,” said coach Daiss. “Zane again was on cruise control, and the other guys played much better today.”
However, the home course of Hart Ranch was not kind to the Rangers, and their luck ran out at the Black Hills Invite May 12.
The Rangers fell to their rivals, the Wall Eagles, who shot a 230 on the steamy day, beating Hill City by seven strokes.
Individually, Daiss and Messick tied for fifth place, while Rahn finished 10th. Tyler and Rupert rounded out the Ranger scoring with 90 and 100 respectively.
“Wall was lights out and deserved to win,” said coach Daiss. “I am pleased with our scoring today and am happy with our play going into regions next week. We will get a few practice rounds in this week to prepare and feel if we can play to the same score we played today we should have a shot at the region championship.”
The Rangers will be on the course next week at the Region 6 Championship at Hart Ranch Monday, May 19.
