Russell Arnold

Russell “Russ” J. Arnold, a devoted husband, father, educator, and faithful servant of God, entered eternal rest April 29, 2025 at the Seven Sisters Living Center in Hot Springs, S.D.
Russ was born June 1, 1948, in Belle Fourche, S.D., to William “Ralph” and Elsie Arnold. Russ lived a life marked by dedication to family, education, maximum perseverance and community service.
Russ’s journey began with an upbringing in Rapid City, S.D. He graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1966. He pursued higher education with enthusiasm, starting at Black Hills State College, earning his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1970. One of his passions during college was theater, as he performed in productions at The Matthews Opera House & in “Barefoot in the Park” in the summer of 1970.
Blessed with his first teaching opportunity in Newcastle, Wyo., within Newcastle Middle School, he inspired young minds from 1970-79. He eventually developed a relationship with fellow teacher, Pamela Maxam. Joyfully, they married Aug. 15, 1975, in Green River, Wyo., beginning a sacred union blessed by faith, love, children and selfless servitude.
Motivated to be a lifelong learner and fortified with a desire to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and father, Ralph Arnold, Russ went on to earn a Master of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Wyoming in 1978, and a Specialist in Education degree from Chadron State (Neb.) College in 1987.
Focused on developing into a servant leader, Russ entered the ranks of Education Administration, specifically as a secondary school principal. His leadership style as a principal was based on holding himself, students and staff to a high level of accountability and professionalism, which helped shape the communities in Edgemont, S.D. (1979-80), Medicine Bow, Wyo. (1980-83), Crawford, Neb. (1983-85), and finally Custer, S.D. (1985-88). With a firm commitment to excellence in education, he reflected a belief in nurturing the potential in every student.
Devastatingly, in the spring of 1989, Russ was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a cross he bore with courage and a positive frame of mind. Despite the physical challenges associated with his battle, he directed his energy to his passions: physical exercise, gardening and supporting causes dear to his heart, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society & Walk, Ski for Light, Custer Garden Club and the Custer Lion’s Club. Equally, his dedication to enhancing the community of Custer, and service to the Lion’s Club earned him the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow Award, a testament to his selflessness.
An avid Denver Broncos fan, Russ found joy in cheering for his team, a lighthearted passion shared with family and friends.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents, William “Ralph” and Elsie Arnold; brother, Robert Arnold; and sister, Mary Alice Moulton; who have welcomed him into the arms of our Heavenly Father.
Russ is survived by his beloved spouse of 49 years, Pamela Arnold of Custer; sons, David (Jenny) of Casper, Wyo., and Michael (Amanda) of Clear Lake, Iowa; and daughter Mary- of Rapid City; along with his seven grandchildren; numerous nieces/nephews; brother/sister in-laws; and the countless friends whose lives he touched.
A memorial service will be held at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer June 21 at 2 p.m., followed by interment at Custer Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Custer Senior Citizens Center or the Custer YMCA in Russ’s memory.
Russ’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was raised and remained a devoted Roman Catholic, he found strength in the sacraments and the promise of eternal life. His love for Christ guided his actions, inspiring those around him to live with compassion and purpose.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
