Things have gotten underway in Pierre
By:
Rep. Dennis Krull
The following information was from week one of the legislative session.
The first week of the 98th session of the South Dakota Legislature in Pierre is over. I want to give you, my constituents, an update of what transpired.
Prior to Inauguration weekend I traveled to Pierre for meetings at the Capitol. It was after these meetings that committee appointments were made. I was notified prior to our official meeting that I had been appointed to the Appropriations Committee. I was thrilled with this appointment since I feel this is my area of interest and experience.
On Saturday morning Janu. 7, legislators in attendance were sworn in in the legislative chamber. Following my swearing in Kim and I attended the inauguration for the governor and other state officials. Saturday evening was the Capitol Ball and the Inaugural Ball.
Monday before the session officially started I began meeting with the Appropriations Committee. This committee is very time consuming and involves committee meetings twice a day. I truly look forward to serving in this capacity.
Tuesday Gov. Kristi Noem gave her State of the State Address. Wednesday was the State of the Judiciary Address by Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen. Thursday was the State of the Tribes Address by Peter Lengkeek of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. Then, on Friday the week ended with more appropriations meetings. I also had a wonderful surprise on Friday when I noticed that three people from District 30 were in the audience at my committee meeting!
This week the session should really get started as there are several bills that have landed in committee for consideration.
