Updating you on what’s happened so far
The legislative session is speeding by—today marks week three, and I’m hard at work advocating for the issues that matter most to you. It’s been a busy couple of weeks, especially after attending the presidential inauguration last weekend. I’m excited to update you on what’s happening in Pierre. I also send out a weekly newsletter via email. Send me an email if you would like to subscribe!
Swearing-In Ceremony
& New Leadership
I was officially sworn in as your state senator Jan. 14 and I’m honored to represent you in the South Dakota Legislature.
At the state level, big changes are also happening. On Saturday, Gov. Kristi Noem was appointed as Secretary of Homeland Security, a critical role in securing our southern border. Following that, Gov. Noem resigned to take on this new role, and I’m excited to see Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden step into the role of governor. His leadership will be pivotal in shaping the future of South Dakota, and it’s exciting to have a governor from West River once again!
Property Tax Relief: Progress and Plans
Property taxes have been a major concern for families and businesses across South Dakota and I’m working hard on solutions. My property tax relief bill is on its way, and I’ve been actively questioning the Department of Revenue in the Taxation Committee to better understand the factors affecting property tax rates. We’ve been gathering data and I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to develop a solution that helps bring relief to homeowners and businesses alike.
Our committee intern has been researching state aid levels to schools since 2020 to evaluate the impact of property tax increases on education funding. I’ll keep you updated as we dig deeper into these issues.
In addition our property tax relief group in the Black Hills is gaining statewide momentum. It’s encouraging to see such strong support for this vital cause. Email me if you’d like to join!
Presidential Inauguration: A Surreal Moment
On a personal note, attending the presidential inauguration last week was a surreal honor. I’m incredibly proud to have been part of the team that helped get President Trump elected. Celebrating his re-election was a sweet moment of victory for all the hard work we put in. Welcome to the golden age of America—the best is yet to come!
Legislative Updates:
Key Bills
I’m working on several important bills this session; one so far has made it through committee, Senate Bill 75. This bill requires citizenship status to be included on South Dakota Driver’s Licenses to ensure that only U.S. citizens can register to vote, enhancing election security.
Additionally, I’m working with my colleagues on bills addressing cosmetology deregulation, mining permit notifications, election integrity and protecting children from transgender ideology.
Governor’s Budget
As we begin reviewing the governor’s proposed budget, I want you to know that I am carefully considering every aspect, including funding for public libraries and SDPB. I have received countless emails and letters regarding SDPB and the library, and I want you to know that I hear loud and clear how important these services are to our community.
Committees and
Capitol Tours
I’ve been appointed to serve on the Taxation and Judiciary Committees, where I’m honored to be vice chair. If you’re interested in visiting the Capitol, I’d love to welcome you or your group for a tour. Contact the Capitol Tour Office at 605-773-3688 to schedule your visit!
