Veterans to be honored

The Heart of the Hills Quilt Guild will again hand out quilts to veterans at the Hill City School District Veterans Day assembly this Friday.

The tradition began seven years ago in 2015. The guild used to give quilts to the Custer project but felt disconnected because quilters didn’t know who their quilts went to, said guild member Lori Comer.

Comer reached out to the school administration  about doing a program which continues to this day.

Veterans are nominated for a quilt. Throughout the years the guild has received as many as 12 nominations but has now capped the recipient total to six, exactly the number of nominees it received this year.

Comer will read the name of the nominee and guild members will walk up the middle of the aisle and wrap each quilt around the veteran. Families of the nominee as well as the nominating individual will be able to sit up front and join in the celebration.

The Veterans Day assembly takes place at the Gins Gym at 9 a.m.

Also on Veterans Day, The Hill City Seniors will host  a free lunch for veterans at the Hill City Center at noon. Christopher Rendon, district commander and county vice-chairman for the American Legion will speak at the lunch, which will feature a menu of ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad and dessert.
