'Watching bluebirds and fire' Oct. 27
JoAnn Stearns claims she has the best office view in the Midwest, and she’s probably right.
For the last three years Stearns as been the lookout at Bear Mountain, which is one of six active fire towers in the Black Hills. It’s a great job with a rich history and she gets many interesting visitors every summer.
On Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at Custer Senior Center. Stearns will tell the story of one special couple that came for a visit and decided to stay—Ted and Irene, a pair of mountain bluebirds that built their nest and raised their babies on a busy fire tower during the 2025 fire season.
The program will include a slide show featuring some of Stearns’ photography and a talk filled with information about bluebirds, wildflowers, lookouts and how doing everything wrong isn’t always a bad thing.
