Won’t stop fighting for property tax relief
As we barrel toward the deadline for filing bills this week, I want to take a moment to share what I’ve been fighting for on your behalf. This past week has been a non-stop push—late nights, early mornings and many tough conversations—to make sure your voices are heard in Pierre.
One of the biggest battles I’m taking on is property tax relief. I’m pleased to announce that my property tax bill will be introduced this week. South Dakotans deserve a fair and predictable tax system, and this bill is the only solution that will ease the financial burden for all homeowners across our state without raising any other taxes. I know how hard South Dakotans of every age work to keep a roof over their heads. Government shouldn’t be squeezing homeowners dry, and I won’t stop until we get meaningful relief.
Another pressing issue we’re addressing is the rising cost of autopsy and related coroner services to counties. It’s not a flashy issue, but it’s an important one—bad actors who caused their own demise should cover the costs of their bad decisions, not taxpayers. There’s no such thing as a victimless crime. My bill addressing this issue successfully passed through committee and will be heard on the floor this week.
This past week I also had the chance to take part in the Attorney General’s Range Night Shoot-Out. History was made as, for the first time ever, a woman took home the top honor! Rep. Terri Jorgensen is now our Annie Oakley. Speaking of history, this session marks the 100th in our state’s history. Adding to the momentous occasion, we swore in our new Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen last week, and this week, we’ll celebrate Gov. Larry Rhoden’s inauguration.
Last week I also had the honor of meeting with two of our county sheriffs from District 30 during their visit to Pierre. Our law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to keep our communities safe. Public safety remains a top priority for me, and I will continue to work to back the blue and ensure our officers have the tools they need to protect us.
Over the weekend, while I was back home, I visited Hill City School on Friday to visit students and saw some incredible educators giving their all for our kids.
Education is everything—it shapes our future—and we’ve got to keep supporting those who dedicate their lives to teaching. I also visited Edgemont School District. My heart also goes out to the Edgemont community as they mourn the loss of a beloved teacher. Despite this heartbreak, I was inspired by the strength and resilience of the staff and students.
Edgemont’s innovative programs, like their heavy equipment simulators, are preparing students for essential trades and high-paying jobs—a true example of what rural schools can accomplish with determination and creativity.
Saturday brought more opportunities to connect with you. I attended the Elevate Crackerbarrel in Rapid City, where I heard directly from constituents. I also managed to squeeze in a night at the Stock Show with Gov. Rhoden and First Lady Sandy Rhoden.
I look forward to this upcoming week in Pierre! If you have thoughts, questions, or concerns don’t hesitate to reach out at amber.hulse@sdlegislature.gov.
