Weather starting to become factor with project

As the Hill City sidewalk project enters its fourth week, crews are starting to have to deal with one of their biggest challenges: the weather.

However, at the city’s weekly sidewalk construction meeting, Dave Buck of Complete Concrete (the firm responsible for the project) said there have been no safety issues on the project so far, a sentiment echoed by Hill City mayor Kathy Skorzewski.

Fewer options for winter in Keystone

Fewer businesses are staying open in Keystone this winter.

“We’re not staying open this year,” said manager Chris Busby of the Keystone Turtle Town. “We are just not busy enough.”

Governor rides in CSP Buffalo Roundup

At precisely 9:42 on Friday, the shout of “There they are!” rang out across the north viewing area on a hillside near the Custer State Park (CSP) buffalo corrals. At that point, several dozen bison could be seen far away on the ridge to the southwest, right above where thousands of spectators were waiting in the south viewing area. 
About 40 minutes later, the last of the herd crossed the road in the valley below to enter the corral area and the 54th annual CSP Buffalo Roundup entered the history books. 

Hiker found dead

The search for a missing hiker in Custer County concluded last week when the body of the man, 22-year-old Torger Henckel, was found at the base of Little Devils Tower in the Black Elk Wilderness Area. Preliminary indications were that Henckel died of a fall while hiking.
Henckel was last seen Sept. 21 when he told friends he was going for a hike. When he didn’t return by that afternoon, he was reported missing to another agency, but the county was not notified until early in the morning on Sept. 23.

FEMA, SBA deny individual flood assistance

One Custer County disaster declaration caused by flooding has been approved by the federal government, but individual assistance for recovery from the Aug. 2 flood in Custer will not be granted.
The U.S. Congress issued a press release Sept. 24 announcing that Custer County was among the counties approved for a major disaster declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). However, that disaster declaration is for the melting of the late May snowstorm and subsequent rain and is for county bridges, roads, etc. 

Man stabbed in VFW

An Edgemont man will face aggravated assault charges with a deadly weapon charges following a stabbing incident in the basement of Custer VFW last Friday evening.
According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:44 p.m. on Sept. 27, a male called 911 to report he had been stabbed. Sheriff Marty Mechaley said it is believed a verbal argument turned into a physical altercation, resulting in the victim being stabbed approximately eight times in the chest, neck and arm.  

Paving discussion front and center at meeting

The Hill City Common Council met on Monday for its regular meeting.

All aldermen were present at the meeting, although aldermen Jim Peterson and Bill Miner teleconferenced in.

BID board nears final design

The Hill City Business Improvement District Board (BID board) did not have a quorum at its Sept 19 meeting. However, those present were still able to discuss the projects — paving the alleyway behind Hill City Senior Center and renovating the senior center.

Sidewalk repairs enter fourth week

The Hill City sidewalk project has entered its fourth week.

At a construction meeting on Monday, representatives from Hill City, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) and Complete Concrete (the company responsible for doing the work) met to discuss the project.

“I’ve heard positive things about the project so far,” said Kathy Skorzewski, Hill City mayor.

Chamber main focus at town board meeting

Keystone Chamber of Commerce Board President Julie Smoragiewicz asked the Keystone Town Board for fairness when dealing with the Chamber at the most recent town board meeting.

“It does not seem appropriate for the chamber to be held to a different standard,” Smoragiewicz said. “It seems that at every turn our heads are being turned under water. And we’re focusing on trying to breathe. It’s just incredibly challenging to try to navigate the ever changing turns of the town.”
