County courthouse to reopen today

Pending any last-minute changes, the Custer County Courthouse is set to reopen to the public today, May 13.
At its May 6 meeting, the Custer County Commission decided to reopen the courthouse to the general public after having closed it to the public March 26 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former vice-principal pleads guilty to disorderly conduct

Former Custer High School assistant principal and activities director Jordan Likness received a suspended 30-day jail sentence, will pay court costs and must attend counseling after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in Seventh Judicial Circuit Court.
Likness was originally charged with two counts of domestic abuse, simple assault Feb. 17.
Likness was susequently placed on administrative leave by the school district, and ultimately resigned his position effective at the end of the school year.

Golden West to waive fees, other COVID-19 information

Golden West is forgoing disconnects and waiving late fees for customers financially impacted by COVID-19 through June 30. The company first made the no disconnects and no late fees pledge in response to COVID-19 March 16. The Custer City Council loosened its reins on Custer businesses a little more at Monday evening’s regular meeting of the council, allowing recreational facilities, public pools, health clubs and athletic facilities to open as long as they provided a request in writing.

State plans ‘Back to Normal’

State health officials said Saturday that a customer at a Hermosa business may have exposed employees and customers to COVID-19. According to a release from the S.D. Department of Health, a patron of Corner Pantry Casino in Hermosa has tested positive for the coronavirus. The individual patronized the business while able to transmit the virus to others on Friday, April 24.
Customers who visited the business April 24 should monitor their symptoms for 14 days, the Department of Health said.
