Cross country team runs as a tight pack

The Wildcat cross country team ran in Belle Fourche last Thursday.
Custer came in second place as a team in the boys varsity 5K race with 51 points. Ahead of them was the home team, Belle Fourche, with 47 points.
The boys were a tight pack in this meet, with all six competitors finishing in the first 19 places. A total of 47 runners ran in the varsity boys race. The Wildcats’ top finisher was Sean Shipp, coming in fifth place with a time of 17:45:54. Just two places behind in seventh place was Drew Lehman, who finished the race in 18:10:57.

Soccer defeats West Central, drops a pair

Sparked by two goals each from Bohdan Pesicka and Koledon Niemann, the Custer High School soccer team picked up its second win of the season over West Central 5-3 last Friday in Hartford.
“We just really came out with a lot of intensity,” head coach Hannah Rehmeier said. “We were making a lot of smart passes and were looking for opportunities and not forcing opportunities.”
Rehmeier said the team did a good job of playing the ball back and maintaining possessions and played solid defense as well.
The other Wildcat goal of the game was scored by Xander Dinius.

Competitive cheer has first meet at home

The Custer Wildcat competitive cheer team had it’s first competition of the season last Thursday at the Custer Cheer and Dance Invitational  held at the Armory. The team competed against Hot Springs, Sturgis, Belle Fourche and the Lakota Tech dance team. At the meet they also honored senior team members Chloe Carder and Kaiyah McDonnell.
“The team did a fantastic job. I think the first competition is always the hardest,” said head coach Jenna Cooper.

Volleyball team wins against Irrigators

The Custer High School volleyball team had a match Thursday against the Newell Irrigators. It played four sets, only losing the second: 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18.
“I was really pleased with how the girls played.  We had good conversations about what we needed to improve upon from our last game, and the girls came onto that court ready to play,” said head coach Jill Hohn.
John said the team had been making some minor adjustments that worked  well.

Golfers win in Box Elder, place five in top 10

The Custer High School boys golf team played its way to its best finish of the season Aug. 29 at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Box Elder as the Wildcats came in first place as a team and had five golfers crack the top 10.
Jackson Wiles led the way for the Wildcats with a score of 80, which was good for second place. Just behind Wiles was teammate Lane Poper in third place at 81.

Wildcat runners shine at Augustana Twilight race

The Custer High School cross country team traveled to Sioux Falls last Friday to compete in the Augustana Twighlight Meet. A total of 72 teams were represented at the meet. The flat course at a lower elevation usually makes for quicker times at the meet, and many runners improved upon last week’s times by big margins despite the hot 90-plus degree weather in Sioux Falls.

Rough first quarter leads to Wildcat loss

Despite what head coach Russ Bailey said was noticeable improvement and highlights in fits and starts, a disasterous first quarter put the Custer High School football team in a hole from which it could not recover last Friday evening in a 45-7 loss to the Tri-Valley Mustangs in Colton.
There was a strong wind blowing out of the south at the beginning of the game, and because of that, the Wildcats decided to take the wind in the second quarter, meaning it started the game battling the wind and dealing with deep offensive field position.

Cross country team enters season with running start

Much of the Custer High School cross country team has been running consistently and steadily through the summer. The hard work seemed to payoff for its first race of the season at Mallo Camp near Newcastle, Wyo., as the boys team earned third place and the girls earned second.
“It was a good first meet for everybody,” said head coach Karen Karim.
The course is hilly and challenging, and  Karim said the team would treat the race like a workout, using it to prepare and get its feet wet for the coming races.

Golfers finish fifth at pre-conference meet

The Custer High School golf team finished in fifth place at last Thursday’s pre-conference meet at Hart Ranch outside of Rapid City.
The Wildcats finished with 372 strokes as a team. Sturgis and Spearfish tied for the team title with 335 strokes.
Regan Sorenson was the team’s leading scorer at the meet, as he carded an 89. He was followed by Zayden LaPlaca at 92, Jackson Wiles at 95, Ayden Petz at 96 and Lane Poper at 98.
Hayden Heig of St. Thomas More took home medalist honors, finishing at 72.

Wildcat volleyball is optimistic for season

The Wildcat volleyball team saw its first games at home this weekend with the Custer Invite Saturday. The team is about 44 players strong—more than they’ve had in recent years.
Head coach Jill Hohn says that this season will look a lot different this year as they adjust to new coaching staff, which includes two new coaches. Heading into the first tournament, Hohn said she was feeling optimistic and that the team was “excited to out it all out on the court.”
