Girls make it two ’Cat titles

Before the Custer High School boys basketball team won its championship matchup in the Chadron Rotary George Watson Holiday Basketball Classic New Year’s Eve, it was ladies first, as the Wildcat girls won the female portion of the tournament, flattening Valentine, Neb., 36-18 in the championship game.
Valentine actually held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcat defense ramped things up and held the Badgers to only eight more points the rest of the game. The Badgers shot only 14 percent for the game.

Girls grab seventh place at LNI

“A big step forward for the program” is what Custer High School girls basketball coach Mick Patzlaff called the 2019 Lakota Nation Invitational, as his Wildcats went 2-2 in the tournament while capturing seventh place.
The girls won the seventh-place game 49-38 over Todd County Saturday afternoon at Rapid Skillz in Rapid City.
Patzlaff changed his starting lineup, inserting freshman Alice Sedlacek, which he said helped get the team going as Sedlacek worked to attack the rim.

Boys win two, lose two at LNI

Heading into last week’s Lakota Nation Invitational basketball tournament, Custer High School boys basketball head coach Paul Kelley said his objective was to get through the tournament healthy and identify team strengths and weaknesses as the calendar turns to 2020.
To that end the mission was accomplished, as the team came out of the tournament relatively unscathed while posting a 2-2 record, alternating losses with wins over the course of the four days.

Custer takes second at Hot Springs meet

The Custer Wildcats came in second at the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza Wrestling Tournament Saturday beating out 14 other teams from South Dakota, Wyoming and Nebraska in the process. 
Philip Area won the tourney with 198.5 points but Custer was only seven points behind at 191.5 and was nearly 50 points ahead of third place Lead-Deadwood. 
“All the kids wrestled well,” said head coach Jared Webster. “We had six in the finals and four champs.”

’Cats dominate Custer Quad, Graf wins in Rapid City

The Custer High School Wrestling team continued its winning ways last week with decisive victories over all three of the opposing teams at the Custer Quad held at the Armory Thursday. 
In team scoring, the Wildcats rolled over Newcastle-Upton, Wyo., 45 to 21, crushed Newell 69-6 and flattened Bennett County 62-12. 
“The kids came out ready to wrestle and so we were very pleased with that,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Custer High School girls basketball coach Mick Patzlaff had two messages for his team at halftime of last Friday’s season-opening game against Newcastle, Wyo.
Get the ball inside on offense, and stop fouling.
The messages were  received loud and clears, as the Wildcats overcame a 28-25 halftime deficit to come away with a 52-42 win over the Dogies in the Armory.

The Custer High School boys basketball team led by as much as 24 at one point of its season-opening victory over Newcastle, Wyo., last weekend, cruising to a 67-53 win behind 21 points from Jace Kelley, 15 points from Daniel Sedlacek and 11 points from EJ Gonzalez.
“When I watched as the game was going on, I thought we had a lot of ugly moments,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “The benefit I have is watching on video numerous times. We did a lot of good things, but there’s still room to grow and improve.”

Wildcat wrestlers win Custer Invitational

With a total of six tournament champions, the Custer High School wrestling team wrestled its way to first place in its own season-opening Custer Invitational Tournament over the weekend at the Armory.
Head coach Jared Webster said the six wrestlers in the winners circle was “probably the most we've had at the Custer Tournament in a long time.”
One of the standouts for the Wildcats was freshman Jonathan Lewis who won the 138 pound championship with a sudden victory (7-5) over Oakley Blakeman of Spearfish.

Boys team checks all the boxes

This year. 2019-20.
For the past few years, when his freshmen and sophomores were taking their lumps on the floors of the various gymnasiums throughout the Black Hills Conference, Custer High School head boys basketball coach Paul Kelley pointed to 2019-20 as the year his young players would be more men than boys and ready to compete for a conference championship.
Or, maybe something even loftier than that.

Girls team should be much improved

Coming off a season where it finished 7-14, the Custer High School girls basketball team is a year older and wiser, and expects to be much improved when the ball gets thrown into the air for the first time Friday evening.
While the team is still young—only four seniors are on the roster—head coach Mick Patzlaff enters his second year at the helm expecting girls who were forced in varsity action last year out of necessity to be much better prepared for games this year thanks to the experience they got under their belts last year and over the summer.
