The 911 Misdial of the day: An anonymous person called the emergency number from another county to report child abuse in another state. They were referred to an agency that could actually do something about the report…in that state.  
3:55 p.m.: A deputy dragged debris from the roadway near Fairburn. 
4:05 p.m.: A lone heifer was wandering the ditches of Hwy. 89 near the Argyle Road. It wandered away before the law got there. 

Big hats, tall boots and...guns?

A recent conversation with local educator, rancher and land-owner, Larry Fiala, has prompted me to recall an incident in our area’s history. Fiala related that he enjoys horseback riding in the Limestone area. His words have prompted me to remember a series of incidents and the surrounding controversy involving cattlemen, sheepmen and the budding Forest Service in the early 1900s. The primary individual in this controversy was a man by the name of Gifford Pinchot.

Kadyn Buck bounces back

Kadyn Buck of Kimball is a vibrant and energetic little boy. His mother says he plays peek-a-boo like any other toddler. That’s in spite of the fact that he has only one eye. 
Shortly before Christmas of 2018 Kadyn’s mother, Manda, the daughter of Deb and the late Bill Bell of Custer, noticed when looking at a photograph that the boy’s right eye had a dull yellow glow instead of the usual “red eye” that results from the camera’s flash hitting the retina at the back of the eye.

10:40 a.m.: A deputy gave a person a ride from Custer to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City. You’ll thank us later. 
12:58 p.m.: A deputy on patrol noticed an open door at a self-storage unit near Custer. Nothing was found to be missing from the unit. 
5:08 p.m.: Deputies refereed a family dispute on Renegade Pass Road. No arrests were made. 
8:59 p.m.: A deputy assisted firefighters with a possible chimney fire on Antelope Street in Pringle. Thankfully no injuries and little damage resulted.

Luke & Lizzie talk dancing dreams

It might seem a little unusual for someone working the front desk at Custer’s YMCA to be wearing metal-tipped tap shoes, but not for Lizzie Anderson who has been dancing her way through life with her big brother, Luke, since both were in grade school. 
Hoping to get in a little tap dancing between helping the folks using the Y, that’s exactly how Lizzie was shod Friday morning when I caught up with her and Luke to talk about their dancing careers: where they’ve come from and where they hope to go.
