Saturday, Oct. 16
6:35 a.m.: Found horses were reported on Buffalo Ridge Road. The owner was called to “cowboy up.”
8:49 a.m.: A white dog running around on Custer’s north 3rd Street managed to elude deputies.
12:07 p.m.: A deputy attended the annual pumpkin patch for kids at a west Custer campground.

Sloggett participates in Honor Flight

“It was the experience of a lifetime!”
That was the reaction of Custer Vietnam veteran Chuck Sloggett, who flew to Washington, D.C. earlier this month with the latest veterans Honor Flight. The journeys, which take military veterans to the nation’s capital to visit various war memorials free of charge, are provided by the non-profit volunteer organization, Midwest Honor Flight.
Sloggett, a 20 year U.S. Navy pilot who served a tour in Vietnam, said he first learned about the flights four years ago when a friend was a participant.

Friday, Oct. 8
3:39 p.m.: Found property was reported in eastern Custer County. The property may be connected with an ongoing criminal investigation. Stay tuned!
5:12 p.m.: A deputy assisted another agency with a matter on Dewey Road.
5:41 p.m.: A deputy rescued a stranded motorist from the side of Hwy.16 near Mud Springs Road.
8:46 p.m.: Deputies dealt with a mental health crisis in the Custer area. Eventually a deputy had to transport a person to a Sioux Falls facility for treatment.

Hollick completes Boston Marathon

After three and a half years of training and planning, Custer runner Beth Hollick can finally cross the legendary Boston Marathon off her bucket list. Hollick and a dozen or so other West River runners traveled to the East Coast earlier this month to participate in the 26.2 mile race through the streets of the historic city on Oct. 11. In doing so, Hollick accomplished one of her goals in running the marathon.

3:36 p.m.: A deputy handled a non-specified miscellaneous matter in the county courthouse parking lot. It likely involved civil stuff.
Wednesday, Sept. 29
The 911 Misdial of the Day: Music and singing was heard in the background of a call to the emergency line. It apparently did not involve any sort of musical emergency.
2:41 a.m.: A deputy made an emergency medical notification on Hidden Valley Road near Hermosa.
7:59 a.m.: Internet fraud was reported on Deer Meadow Road. The incident is under investigation.

Air guitar returns to rock Custer

On Saturday, March 14, 2020, the best air guitar masters in the region were supposed to converge on Custer Beacon for a night of crowd-raising antics that would have made the best of the hair bands proud.
Then, COVID-19 hit, providing the ultimate buzzkill.
And while it won’t be an official U.S. Air Guitar Championship as it was set to be in 2020, an air guitar championship is set to strike the right chord this Saturday, Oct. 16,
 at the Custer Beacon once more.
