Jadwiga Ziolkowski retires from Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation’s board chair Joe Dobbs announced that the executive committee of the board of directors accepted Jadwiga Ziolkowski’s request to retire from her position as co-CEO of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation to spend more time with her family.
Ziolkowski’s leadership impact on the memorial has been significant with major accomplishments cited in developing The Indian University of North America, advancing Native American cultural programs and building on the dream of her parents, sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and his wife, Ruth.

11:37 a.m.: Another attempt at the “grandson scam” happened on Custer’s 7th Street. The alert reporting person didn’t fall for the gag. 
12:41 p.m.: Deputies dealt with a death investigation on Jewell Road. 
12:57 p.m.: A lone bison was causing “quite a traffic issue” on Hwy. 16 near Renegade Pass Road. The owner was contacted.

9-year-old gets letter from the White House

Custer fourth grader Jersey Barrick got an unusual surprise in the mail recently: a large manilla envelope bearing the return address “The White House, Washington, D.C.” Inside was a personal letter to her signed by President Donald Trump.
Jersey wasn’t completely caught off guard by the presidential correspondence, however. In fact, she had been looking for a letter from Trump since she wrote him in March to comment on the coronavirus situation.

By losing 34-1/2 pounds comprising 21.97 percent of her body weight, Tammy Walker was the winner of the Custer County Chronicle’s Biggest Loser contest ... Custer Mayor Harold Stickney, objected to a hospital subsidy, saying he was against the city using so much of its money to help prop up hospital operations when there were so many projects he felt sales tax money needed to be used for within the city.

8:18 p.m.: More fire fun happened on Hazelrodt Cutoff. A deputy helped fire units find it and fix it. 
9:17 p.m.: Someone spotted “a big dumpster” in the middle of Custer’s 6th Street and a deputy wheeled it back to its usual spot. 
9:26 p.m.: A deputy “took care” of an injured deer on Hwy. 385 south of Custer, if you know what I mean…fuggedaboudit. 
 9:43 p.m.: A suspicious vehicle was reportedly parked at a storage complex on Hazelrodt Cutoff. It was gone before anyone got there.

­­10 years ago, 2010 — Elk Mountain School voted to opt out of the school’s state aid formula, seeking an additional $55,000 from its taxpayers to keep the school afloat ... The Almost Original team made up of Ashley Schultz, Kate Starr, Chad Bryant and Luke Roddy won the volleyball tourney at Gold Discovery Days, but The Holligans team was voted the best dressed ...  The county highway department was facing a $400,000 shortage.

New Yorker finds home, employment in Custer

Kirsten Meeker and her husband, Chris Volpe, have had a long road back to Custer. 
The former New York City (NYC) residents moved here in June and Kirsten, a certified Red Cross swim instructor, volunteered to teach beginners in the YMCA classes this summer at the Custer pool.
“I mentioned to Connie (Tye, YMCA program director) that I was a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI). She said she needed volunteers to help her. Of course, I missed teaching and I couldn’t say no to that, even if it was for a few weeks!” Kirsten said. 

Kettles passionate about rescues

 A frequent social cause for celebrities is finding homes for rescued dogs.
For example, Miranda Lambert now has eight dogs at her home and has helped raise more than $3 million in the name of pet rescue.
Even George Clooney, a leading movie star, has owned rescue dogs since 2010. Wanting his first dog to like him, he rubbed turkey meatballs all over his shoes and the two became immediate friends.
