­­10 years ago, 2011 — Custer School District was facing up to $1 million in cuts ... Lo-Ru West Dance Studio presented its presentation of “Swash Buckled” with a cast of 48 dancers ranging in age from 4 to 17 ... The county agreed to pay Scull Construction $29,520 after reaching a settlement for time lost on the renovation and expansion of the Custer County Courthouse after contamination was found in the soil in the area where the elevator shaft was being constructed.

Wednesday, Jan. 27
4:47 p.m.: A deputy and the county coroner dealt with a death on Morris Place. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
5:37 p.m.: Cows were reported out of their pasture near Custer Highlands. A possible owner was called to corral them.
7:42 p.m.: Deputies investigated a loud music complaint at a trailer park west of Custer. No loud music was heard.
Thursday, Jan. 28
1:28 a.m.: A deputy checked out an abandoned vehicle parked behind a semi-popular Custer convenience store. The derelict ride may be towed by the management.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — For a few days, Custer was in the grip of bitterly cold temperatures whichcaused broken pipes, a spike in the need for heating fuel and caused the Custer School District to start school two hours late two days...Rachel Petik, 14, of Custer, was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after the car she was driving struck another vehicle during a traffic accident ...

The 911 Misdial of the Day: A device dialed the emergency line without the owner’s knowledge somehow.
1:55 a.m.: A deputy moved wind-blown construction cones from the traffic lanes of Custer’s north 5th Street.
12:32 p.m.: Fake sweepstakes scams were reported on Alamo Lane. The reporting person realized that the Publisher’s Clearinghouse organization likely did not require its winners to open bank accounts for them and gave the scammers nothing.

Horkey takes senior center helm

“Exciting” and “exhilarating” are words Roxanne Horkey uses to describe her feelings about being hired as the new director of Custer Senior Center, but she also admits the challenge is a little scary.
“I’d be lying if I said, ‘I’ve got this,’” said Horkey, who officially took over the position Monday. “This is an amazing opportunity, but it’s all going to be a challenge.”

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Frank Schmidt killed a record lion. The cat, a 5-year-old male, weighed 177 pounds and was 88 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Luke Neduna, a resource biologist with the S.D. Department of Game, Fish & Parks, confirmed it was the largest lion taken in South Dakota since hunting seasons began for mountain lions in 2005 ... The Custer County Register of Deeds no longer offered residents the option of filing for or renewing a passport ...

2:03 p.m.: Deputies responded to a reported argument at a Pine Street residence in Buffalo Gap, resolving the situation by separating those involved.
3:49. p.m.: Someone saw a speeding Subaru on Hwy. 385 north of Wind Cave Park. The speedy Subaru wasn’t seen again.
5:38 p.m.: Music and loud noise were reported at a trailer park on Hwy. 16 west of Custer. The music-makers were told to turn it down.
