Boy, are we cratering Canada and Mexico’s property taxes.
The U.S. is officially the neighbor nobody wants to live next to. We have the barking dogs. The cars on blocks. We never mow our grass. We may or may not be selling drugs to children.  Chipped siding, a tattered roof and we hog all the on-street parking. We are the stuff of nightmares.

Carolyn Hunter

Carolyn R. Hunter was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Mitchell, S.D., to Lyle B. and Ruth (Jessup) Reese. She met the love of her life, Hansel “Hal” A. Hunter, at the skating rink in Custer, S.D., and they married Jan. 12, 1957. Carolyn retired as a bank teller. She loved to crochet and read romance novels.
Carolyn, of Custer, passed away Jan. 11, 2021, at the Avantara Mountain View Nursing Home in Rapid City, S.D. She was 85.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Ruth Reese; son, Phillip; daughter, Shelia; and brother, Gene Reese.

Boys fall behind big early, lose to Cavs

With the St. Thomas More Cavaliers losing five of their top six players to graduation and Custer returning a bevy of seniors and talent this winter, it was felt in some circles this could be the year the Wildcats broke the Cavalier stranglehold on the Black Hills Conference crown.
For now at least, it’s—pardon the pun—More of the same.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 24-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 40-9 lead at halftime to cruise to a 50-27 win over the Wildcats last Thursday in Rapid City.

Gov. Noem laid out her plans

Greetings! Week one is in the past! Friday was a short day as everyone wanted to get home before dark with the high winds and, in eastern South Dakota, blowing snow. We did start Friday with a briefing from the South Dakota Air and Army National Guard.  Maj. Gen. Jeff Marlette, who is the Adjutant General, did a remarkable job briefing the legislators on the state of the National Guard. It’s probably one of the session’s highlights, listening to what our Guard has accomplished in defense of our great state and nation.

Capitol rioting was inexcusable

Make no doubt about it, rioting and destruction at our nation’s Capitol last Wednesday was totally shocking and inexcusable. What started out as a massive rally in support of President Trump quickly turned ugly when some in the crowd started pushing aside barricades and forcefully entered the nearby Capitol building. Those were not the actions of peaceful Trump supporters.

There is always a way

When my middle son, Jonathan, was stationed in Korea, he told me he wished he could know what the future held for him, even though he knew that was impossible. And he didn’t have to know his entire future; he just wanted to see a glimpse of what lay before him just a few steps ahead.
“I just want to peek around that corner,” he told me.
None of us know what the future holds, and at no time in my life have I been more aware of that than these last few months with all the changes in our world and in my personal life.

This year’s session has begun

Greetings! It’s here!  What’s here? The 96th legislative session started Jan. 12. We kicked off the governor’s State of the State address to a joint session.  The senators come over and sit in the House chamber for joint sessions since we have a bigger chamber. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, we have another joint session for the State of the Judiciary address given by our Chief Supreme Court Justice.  Finally, our last joint session for the week is Thursday, Jan. 14, for the State of Tribes address.

The ups and downs of 2020

Greetings and Happy New Year! Everyone is saying what a bad year 2020 was, and good riddance. Well, for those who lost jobs or their business, I agree. I agree even more for those who lost a loved one.  The latter includes most of us I’m afraid.
Being an eternal optimist, I thought 2020 had its high points. Let me explain. Because of the virus, we were forced into social distancing and being outside more. I used the virus excuse to fish more than ever and it was by far my best fishing year.

Naugle was there at the right time

 In all the craziness of the past year in dealing with a dangerous virus, there is no one in the community whose decisions affected more people than Custer School District Supt. Mark Naugle. Decisions about distance learning vs. in-school classes affected students, teachers, parents and employers in the Custer School District.
Naugle sought input from staff and school board members along the way, which is what a school superintendent should do. The fact that we got students back in classrooms in August is a testament to that leadership.

Supporters thank the President

I didn’t write the following message to our president, but it expresses the sentiments of more than 74 million Americans who voted for President Donald Trump.
“Win, lose or fraud...President Trump, I just want to say thank you for the last four years.
“Thank you for making it cool to be an American again.
“Thank you for showing us that we don’t need to be under China’s thumb anymore economically or in any other way.
