COVID-19 session was informative

I would like to thank everyone who attended the listening session I set up regarding the additional COVID-19 funding of $1.25 billion. We had a nice turnout and I really appreciated the South Dakota Speaker of the House, Steve Haugaard, coming to Rapid City to listen to the concerns and ideas of West River citizens.  

Democrats spell out platform

The  2020 Democratic Party Platform is now posted on the Internet and we are passing it along as a public service. It pretty much spells out in its 92 pages how a DNC House,  Senate, and President would run the United States.
It clearly states exactly how the DNC proposes to handle every problem faced by America and includes:
•Universal healthcare and Medicaid for all Americans and illegal aliens. (Pg 61)
•$15 minimum wage
•Immediate citizenship for illegals (Pg 63)
•Free college (Pg 65)

My older brother Wendell gave me some advice many years ago when we were kids that has served me well over the years. I don’t recall the reason or the occasion but I clearly remember, him telling me, “Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see.”

Don’t forget to vote in the election

It’s time to vote. I know I’m always harping on voting. I feel it’s very important to vote. I’ll even go so far as to say that it’s your civic duty to vote! There are two ways to vote before Election Day on Nov. 3.
 1. In person at your county auditor’s office. Yep, registered voters can vote absentee (I don’t understand why it’s called absentee when you’re there in person.) starting Sept. 18 and continuing through Nov. 2. You must bring a valid photo ID and just in case, a mask, to vote.

Roundup keeps spotlight on South Dakota

South Dakota is about to be in the national spotlight once again this year with the annual Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park early this Friday. Some 1,450 bison will be herded into the corrals at the south end of the park by wranglers on horseback and pickups. More than 10,000 people and more typically attend this unique, exciting event.

Greetings! Fall is upon us! Those of us who are blessed to live up in the Hills have had our first snow; six to eight inches at our place. It has come and mostly gone, but it’s great waking up in the morning to the cool, fresh air that smells so good and goes all the way down to the bottom of your lungs! I love living in the Black Hills!

Criminals are running wild

It’s long past time we put an end to these endless attacks on law enforcement members and call a spade a spade. There have been a series of isolated incidents involving white police officers and minority perpetrators that have been in the news for the past several years.
Ever since the highly-publicized Aug. 9, 2014, incident in Ferguson, Mo., that resulted in the shooting death of a black 18-year-old man at the hands of a white police officer, our nation has witnessed a series of destructive riots like in Ferguson.

The miracle of the U.S. Constitution

Constitution Day, Sept. 17, the day Americans celebrate the signing of the Constitution which was then sent to the states for ratification, is almost here.  The numerous attacks on it, its founders, and the anarchy in our big cities today should give us cause to reflect upon what a gift it was/is to mankind.  

Early voting begins next week

Greetings and Happy Early Voting!
Yep, I said happy early voting, as the polls open next Friday, Sept. 18. This election is called the General Election. All candidates who won their primary elections June 2 now go forward for the final election. Those winning the General Election get sworn into office in January. The term they serve depends on the office, but is usually two or four years. The U.S. Senate and Public Utilities Commission terms are six years.

The evolution of newspapers

We’ve  come a long way in the newspaper business in the past 140 years, and that’s an understatement of the year.
Can you imagine setting individual pieces of type in a line and doing this line after line? That’s the way printed material like newspapers were originally produced. Each piece of type was the same height, .918 inches to be exact.
