Actors win Superior Awards at State

After a first-place performance of their play “Drift’ by Dennis Bush at the Regions competition, the Custer High School drama department performed again at the State One-Act Play Festival at O’Gorman High School in Sioux Falls last Friday.
Custer competed against 11 other class A schools. At the festival, schools from across the state competed for superior rankings in individual, ensemble, play and technical categories for their one-act plays. The performances are judged by theater professionals from across the state.

‘Grandma Jan’ teaches etiquette class

Not everyone is so lucky to have a grandmother nearby to teach them proper manners and dining etiquette—unless you’re a Custer High  School student.
Jan Wilson, known to many as ‘Grandma Jan’ from her time working in Custer schools, taught manners and etiquette  lessons during special lunch and breakfast sessions to Custer High School seniors last Wednesday and Thursday.
“Contrary to belief, manners are not outdated,” says Wilson.
She began hosting the classes for high school seniors in the 2017-2018 school year.

CHS one-act to perform at State

After winning first place  in the Regions competition at Custer High School last Wednesday, Custer will be one of two drama departments in the 6A region to move on to perform at the state competition at Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School Feb. 2-4.
The play, Drift, by Dennis Bush follows the lives of eleven homeless people in the Theatre District of New York City.
“They’re not movers and shakers, they just get moved and shaken. In a world that’s been turned upside down, they find poetry and pain, with no pity and shame,” reads the play’s program.

Talking Elk Mountain School policies

School policies are very important to the functioning of every school district.  Even though Elk Mountain School District (EMSD) is very small, we still need to have in place most of the same policies that all of the larger districts have. It is important for board members to be familiar with the policies, have them readily accessible and to keep them updated.  The board strives to do its very best for the school district by following policies.  

New girls locker room unveiled

Student athletes in Custer girls sports teams will appreciate the recently-rennovated girls locker room in the Custer Armory. The new locker room takes the place of a room which was previously being used for storage.
The idea to convert the room into a new locker room for the girl athletes was activities director Joey Kortermeyer’s. The renovation began in November, and is now completed and ready for use by Custer’s student athletes.

Elk Mountain spreads Christmas cheer

“It was a ball. They just ate it up,” said administrator Shaun Pitts about Elk Mountain students Josh Bradeen, Charles Hardestey, Owen Arp and Andrew Bradeen, who brought gifts and good fun to families in the Elk Mountain and Limestone areas of the county over the course of a few days in December.

Tietsort praised for horse rescue

A Custer man is being praised for traveling to the northern Hills during a recent snowstorm to rescue a blind and pregnant mare who had gotten out of her fence and was stuck in chest-high snow.
After a snow storm in mid-December dumped five feet of snow on her place in a box canyon at 5,200 feet near Central City, Barbara Jean Atchison lost track of the registered quarter horse mare, “Cherokee,” expected to foal in the spring. When finally located some distance from the barn, the mare was on the wrong side of the fence and blocked in by piles of heavy snow.

CHS facing officials shortage

Last week, Custer’s school administration sent out a notice for those who follow school sports to be aware of the shortage of referees. Joey Kortemeyer, Custer High School activities director, is concerned this winter’s basketball game operations could be greatly affected because of the lack of officials.
“We still need game officials for middle school, C and JV level games,” she said. “We’re having trouble finding people to officiate and games have had to be moved because there’s not enough officiating crew.”

New food service director at school

The Custer School District has an almost-entirely new cafeteria team this year led by Erica Layton, the new food service director through Lunchtime Solutions.
Layton and her husband lived in South Dakota for a time before moving to Alaska and later Arizona. However, they always wanted to come back.
“Out of every place we lived, this is our favorite,”  Layton said. “This is home.”

Noem opens call to student artists

In celebration of National Arts in Education Week Gov. Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Arts Council announced the opening of the Governor’s Student Art Competition.
 
All South Dakota students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in this program. Selected student work from four age divisions will be exhibited in the state capitol building in Pierre from January through September 2023.
