Free meals offered this summer

Free meals are available this summer effective immediately for all children up to age 18 in Custer School District.
To better prepare for meals families are asked to sign-up for the free meals and “Weekend to Go” (WTG) meals by calling 673-4157 (Monday through Thursday) or emailing Tammie with Lunchtime Solutions, Inc. t.adam@lunchtimesolutions.com.

Kremer project raises over $17k

Grace Kremer, a senior from Custer High School, hosted an anti-human trafficking event April 17 with guest speakers, followed by a live benefit auction. Between free will donations and the live auction she raised over $17,000 for a safe house for minor girls that have been rescued from sex trafficking.

Smedsrud balances work, school, life

High School is different for every student—it’s harder for some and easier for others. With advanced technology and a newer educational curriculum not only do students deal with school, some work and have personal issues that need to be taken care of. For some students it could be that their educational skills are not as strong as they desire, or it could be friendships and relationships. There is more to high school then what people see outside of the students’ shoes.

Vets smiling about senior project

Several area veterans are able to smile again as a result of a Custer High School student’s senior project. Laney Carlin organized a free dental day for veterans April 16, which performed a range of dental procedures for 17 Southern Hills veterans, some of whom thought they would never be able to eat solid foods again.
Carlin said the idea originated last fall when she was in the family kitchen trying to decide what to do for her senior project. She said she wanted it to be in a career field she might be interested in pursuing, like dentistry.

Yackley pushes through struggles

Today we have more technology and a different teaching curriculum, but students still struggle with social media, bullying and mental and physical health. Mathias Yackley is one of many students who struggle with severe depression and anxiety. He walked into high school thinking he would be judged for being different, for being weird. He thought it would be easier to make friends than it proved to be.

Hard work pays off for Tim Johnson

How we see high school students is different from the reality of what we should see. As much as you know, high school seems like all fun and games. Though the teaching curriculum is much different from before, students struggle more than many see. Those students have accomplished their goals and come out with successes.
Tim Johnson shows the struggle of being a high school student, yet still staying on top of all of his goals. Johnson came into high school with the thought of being a star student and was excited to be a part of the drama club.

Host families sought for students

After a year of limited person-to-person connections, one organization is calling on Black Hills-area families to form new global ties within their communities through student exchange.
Greenheart Exchange seeks host families to welcome students for the 2021-22 school year.
Host families provide meals, a safe living environment and encouragement as their student navigates new cultural experiences.

Custer FCCLA staying busy

The members from the Custer Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Chapter gathered with fellow members from across Region I - South Dakota FCCLA Meeting. Over 100 members, advisers and guests attended the FCCLA Leadership Conference held at Wall High School Jan. 29. The theme was “Beyond Measure.” members participated in workshops, professional presentations, general sessions, and several other activities.

Incentivizing achievement

It started with donuts.
Now this week Custer High School Principal Tobey Cass is shifting into second gear in his experiment in positive re-enforcement. He is doing that by handing out gift cards to students who have not had a late or missing assignment in the first semester of this school year and have thus stayed off the school’s ICU radar screen.

New walk-in cooler installed

To support and expand Custer School District’s ability to serve healthy and delicious meals to its students, a new walk-in cooler/freezer was installed outside Custer Elementary School in late January.
The new 8x20 trailer unit will provide much needed space to meet district needs while navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, and also in the future as the district experiences anticipated growth, said superintendent Mark Naugle.
