— Due to several setbacks and lack of community participation, the Heart of the Hills Logging Show was cancelled...Iron stomachs gathered at the Gaslight Restaurant for a wing eating contest. Proceeds went to the Ranger field renovation project. Luke Moore won the championship, eating 44 wings during the six-round competition that saw the wings get increasingly more spicy...The Hill City Arts Council and the Black Hills Film Festival were chosen to receive grants of $11,212 and $5,000, respectively, from the South Dakota Arts Council.

‘I love you, you’re perfect’ is perfect

The Black Hills Playhouse’s second summer show, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is a hilarious intimate show that  delves into the intricacies of men and women as they navigate dating, marriage and relationships after divorce or the death of a spouse. Billed as a musical revue, the lyrics are witty, if not at times so accurate, as to leave you hysterically laughing.

Black Hills 100 creates tent city

Dozens of tents sprouted up like mushrooms last Tuesday at Trailside Park Resort  Campground on the south side of Hill City supported by a fleet of trucks, trailers, busses and staff which temporarily transformed the campground into a military-like encampment. By 8:30 the next morning the tent city and most of the other equipment were gone.

Wonderettes lead marvelous BHP return

After last year’s COVID-19 blackout, “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” which opened Friday night, was the perfect show to launch the return of the Black Hills Playhouse (BHP) for its diamond jubilee season. The feel-good nostalgic music and plenty of laugh-out-loud comedy was just the right mix for the theater’s—and the nation’s—much-needed return to live entertainment. There is much to say about this delightful production, but first let’s talk about the changes made at the Playhouse itself for this unique restart season.

A major decline in the availability of affordable child-care options in South Dakota has prevented some parents from entering the workforce and created financial and emotional hardships for low-income families and single parents trying to balance work and daycare needs.

—  5 YEARS AGO, 2016 Mount Rushmore was the site for a bevy of beauties as 27 former Miss South Dakotas posed for a picture as part of the 70th anniversary celebration of the Miss South Dakota pageant...The U.S. Forest Service sought public input on the proposed connector trail from the Mickelson Trail to Mount Rushmore National Monument. The S.D. Game Fish and Parks proposed trail would go through 14 miles USFS land, 1.4 mi. within the monument and .1 mi. through private land...Vanessa Row of Keystone was named the South Dakota Finance Officer of the Year.

Keystone UCC to celebrate 125+1

The Keystone Congregational United Church of Christ church celebrates its 125+1 anniversary June 27 in Watson Park. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with a short service, followed by a short program and a picnic lunch served by the church.  
Everyone is invited to see church records and photos displayed in the park, and to visit the church at 402 Blair St. from noon until 2 p.m. to see more exhibits and view the stained glass windows created by the late Wayne Warvi.
