New format for Open Stage

The Valentine’s Day edition of the Hill City Arts Council Open Stage night drew a large crowd to the High Country Guest Ranch this past weekend.

The 2021 series of performances, which began in January, has a new updated format with the same welcoming vibe.

Bingo game helps Lions Club and community

About 70 people turned out to the Boys and Girls Club in Hill City for a bingo event benefiting the Lions Club.

The Lions Club is a non-profit service organization dedicated to helping the community via various programs.

“The Lions Club has been around in Hill City for a long time,” said member Jeremy Duprey. “We look to serve the community in ways that we can.”

Duprey explained that the local chapter is part of the International Lions Club, which, according to its website, has over “48,000 Lions Clubs around the world.”

Delta Dental van brings smiles

The Delta Dental Mobile Program visited the Hill City School District last week.

An annual tradition, the program is sponsored by the Tin City Masonic Lodge #112 and is done at no cost to the kids.

A guy, a truck, a mission

Mike Proios is no stranger to helping his community.

Proios retired from the U.S. Post Office in 2017 and began volunteering with the Keystone Project soon after.

Spending time talking to community members, Proios sought a way to help feed the hungry in town.

“It’s tough to be poor and hungry,” he said. “That insecurity is not a good deal.”

Time for bingo

Winter bingo has begun in Keystone.

About 30 people showed up this past weekend to enjoy food, fun and fellowship at the Keystone Community Center gym.

Ranae Schrier, who came from Rockerville, explained why she comes to bingo.

“I want to support small town community,” she said. “I come to socialize.”

Schrier, who comes every other week, enjoys the food as well.

“Great food each week is something different,” she said. “And then community people bring desserts to share.”

Winter blues broken

It’s easy to feel a little blue this time of year.

But merchants in Hill City aimed to fix that with the annual Breakin’ the Winter Blues Chili Cookoff, and merchants are reporting strong numbers during the day.

“I heard rumor of a chili cookoff, and I had to come up and check it out myself,” said Michael Goad of Custer.

Ornament party tradition continues

Close to 30 women gathered in the Keystone Community center gym for the annual Ladies Ornament Party.

The longstanding tradition is a staple of community and fellowship for local women in the area.

“I think everybody looks forward to it,” said Shanna Harris, one of this year’s event organizers.

She, along with Mary Triplett and Dot Lesewski hosted the party, which is organized by different women each year.

“It’s volunteers every year,” explained Lesewski.

Hanukkah celebrated at Rushmore

About 20 people helped to usher in the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah at the base of Mount Rushmore this past weekend.

The celebration was led by Rabbi Mendel Alperowitz. Alperwitz has been bringing this tradition to the Black Hills since 2017.

“Our founding fathers established this great country and ensured that we all have the right to practice freely and assert our religious liberty and I felt that there is no better place to  celebrate that than with a menorah lighting at Mount Rushmore,” he said.
