To all veterans who have served this great country, I want to say I sincerely thank you for your great sacrifice and service to this great country. When you took your oath of office, whether as enlisted or as a commissioned officer, you wrote a blank check to the U.S. government for the amount of and including your own life in defense of this great nation.  I feel honored to be part of the brother and sisterhood of such great American heroes.

In the legislature we often discussed the fact that many of our children grow up and move away to the big city and have asked the question, “what we can do to help bring young South Dakotans home?”

I drove down Old Hill City Road the other day. It’s not my normal route, so it surprised me to see how far along the new houses being built are. We all know where I’m talking about.

Greetings! The familiar question I’ve been asked is, “What’s going on in the legislature?” As I’ve written before, we’re going for special session next week starting Nov. 7 and going through Nov. 9. The subjects we are taking up are redistricting and attorney general impeachment hearings.
What we are not doing is taking up vaccine mandates. I say that as my email has a lot of requests demanding a special session regarding vaccine mandates.  All other legislation, including vaccine mandates, must wait until we convene for regular session starting Jan. 11.

State rancher stories continued

Our ranchers are facing the possibility of their land taxes increasing anywhere from 60 to 280 percent if the newly proposed soil reassessment and tax tables are implemented. The Department of Revenue has pulled back the proposed reassessment in order to work “all the bugs out” before formal implementation occurs. That is a good thing, but even the “possibility” of the rancher’s future land taxes going up anywhere from 60 to 280 percent, depending on their soil type, is neither fair nor equitable and definitely not acceptable.

Pheasant hunting is worth preserving

From the Black Hills to the eastern plains, the familiar sound of shotgun blasts can usually be heard popping in the distance. It’s hunting season and we are starting to get into my favorite time of year: pheasant season.
When I was a young girl, my grandmother Dorris would take me pheasant hunting. I also hunted plenty with my dad, an avid outdoorsman. They’re both gone now and what remains are the treasured memories of those hunting trips.

A South Dakota rancher’s story

This week I’d like to introduce you to a rancher from Hermosa, located in Custer County. For confidentiality purposes, we will refer to her as Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith’s family homesteaded her land in 1899, that is 122 years ago, the same year South Dakota became a state. She has worked and lived on this ranch most of her life and to her knowledge, the land mentioned below has only been used as grazing land.

Greetings! Let’s start off with the announced special session Nov. 9-10.  There are two subjects for the special session: impeachment of our attorney general and redistricting.
Let’s start with impeachment proceedings of our attorney general. The title is an oxymoron. We here in good old South Dakota are going to conduct impeachment proceedings of our number one law enforcement officer. Really? Unbelievable but true.

Dealing with ag land taxation

Today our growers and ranchers face many roadblocks and obstacles such as fluctuation of prices and costs related to production. However, the agriculture community is facing an even more dangerous problem: the proposed soil reassessment that the Department of Revenue (DOR) is working on with South Dakota State University.
