Chocolate, chili attract large crowd

It was a brisk day for the 10th annual Polar Bear Chilli Cook Off. 
The fundraising event for the Tin City Masonic  Lodge No. 112 allows people to sample various chilis and support the community organization.
There were several different themed booths at the Polar Bear Chili Cook Off all vying for best decorated. The FedEx drivers had, ironically, a FedEx theme. They were serving a standard chili. Krull’s Market had a road kill scene. They joked their road kill red chili was made with roadkill off the side of the road and put into a chili.

Legislators meet with District 30 residents

The legislative cracker barrel held this past Saturday, Feb. 12, drew  close to 30 people interested in having their voices heard and learning about the upcoming legislative session. 
Julie Frye-Mueller, Tim Goodwin and Trish Ladner all began by expressing the same sentiment, “your voices were heard,” in regards to the Governor’s proposed campground at Custer State Park. “The campground is dead,” said Goodwin, who assured attendees the matter would not come up again.

Hybrid film festival to begin

The 13th annual Black Hills Film Festival is about to open virtually to the public. The virtual portion of the festival takes place Feb. 18-28. There will be no time constraints for people to watch the movies they choose.
“It’s open so people can watch when they want to watch,” said executive director Chris VanNess. “You have plenty of time to watch everything.”

Man faces assault, burglary charges

Joel Cornelison, 33, of Hill City, was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated assault and one count of first degree burglary in response to an incident on Allen Gulch Road in Hill City Feb 12. 
Charges are pending for others involved in the incident.

Feb 12 is the day to celebrate the season in Hill City.
“At the Chamber we’ve dubbed this month as ‘Fantastic February’ because of all of the fantastic events, activities and fun we have,” said Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director of the  Hill City Chamber of Commerce.  
Visitors and locals can start their day by sampling chili for a great cause.  The 10th annual Polar Bear Chili Cook-off  is hosted by the Tin City Masonic Lodge No. 112.

Keystone Town Board gets a raise

Keystone Town Board trustees will make more money per meeting. Resolution 2-2-2022  was unanimously approved by the board at its Feb 2. meeting. The idea was brought to the board by Cassandra Ott, the town’s finance officer.
The  resolution gives town board members their first pay raise since 1978. Trustees will now make $85 for each regular meeting and $25 per special meeting. They will  also receive a $40/month phone stipend.

Love INC coming to the Heart of the Hills

A group of community members from the Hill City area are looking to help expand the very popular Love INC of the Black Hills into the Heart of the Hills. 
The mission of this group is to mobilize churches and transform lives and communities in the name of Christ. So far three churches are involved: Community Lutheran, Saint Rose of Lima, and the Little White Church.

If you want to put someone off about something you don’t want to do, you might tell them “I’ll do it the second Tuesday of next week” or “I’ll get to it on the 30th of February.” When you’re the South Dakota Legislature, you schedule the unwanted item—in this case a legislative bill—for the 41st legislative day. Since the legislature can only meet for 40 legislative days, the move effectively kills the measure, at least as far as that year’s session is concerned.

Keystone talks water ordinance, bridge

In a sad but practical decision members of  the Keystone Senior Center voted to disband last week. Twenty people packed the Keystone Senior Center building and discussed the merits of keeping the center open versus closing it. The biggest concern the center  has faced for the past few years has been the lack of volunteers. At this meeting there were only two members present.
“I’m not sure if we are even legal if we are nonprofit,” said senior center board president Jon Veltman, due to the lack of quorum the board has had over the last several  months.
