Southern Hills newspapers sold

After nearly 22 years of ownership, Charley and Norma Najacht have sold the Custer County Chronicle and Hill City Prevailer News weekly newspapers to Jerry Lenander of Custer.
The sale was effective last Friday, Oct. 8, and included the 1890 historic downtown Garlock building in Custer which is home to the Chronicle.
“The Prevailer has always been a locally-owned newspaper, and we are pleased this will continue with Jerry,” the Najachts said.

Labor shortage, COVID-19 costs cause crisis in long-term care industry

Finding a safe, affordable and accessible nursing home or assisted-living center for sick or elderly South Dakotans has become more difficult in recent years, but is getting harder than ever due to a shortage of facility workers and financial losses suffered amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The labor shortage affecting businesses across South Dakota is hitting long-term care facilities particularly hard, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating historic challenges in hiring workers at nursing homes and assisted-living centers.

Natural gas bills set to spike

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) warns natural gas customers to expect higher prices this heating season and suggests South Dakotans take steps now to keep bills manageable this winter. South Dakota natural gas customers may already be seeing higher per therm charges on their bills and as temperatures drop, the bill impact will grow.  

Veterans gift deadline is Oct. 18

Don’t forget that the deadline for donating the items for this year’s Veterans’ Gift Shop is Oct. 18 to allow plenty of time for the vets to shop, wrap and send their gifts.
Hill City Senior Center is once again sponsoring this collection. Gifts collected are sent to the veterans’ facilities in Hot Springs. The veterans there then pick gifts to send to members of their families...men, women and children of all ages. Members of the auxiliary help in the selection, wrapping and mailing of the gifts.

City puts Bobcat attachment on hold

An approval to purchase a snowblower attachment for the city’s Bobcat was tabled at the Sept. 27 Hill City Common Council meeting. Although the city had previously approved the $5,924 request for the attachment, the price quote received had expired and did not include a truck- loading chute piece. With the chute, the attachment would be $9,509. 
The truck-loading chute piece is a critical part of the city’s plan that would allow the city to remove snow directly from the street to a dump truck without the need to create piles in the process. 

Fire mitigation continues to roar

For the last year officials from the Town of Keystone and fire experts from the region have been working together to put together a fire mitigation plan for the town. The group, a mix of private and public partnerships, has been working together for the same goal:  to make Keystone as fire resilient as possible. 

Fireworks return already in the air

According to a Sept. 29 press release, Gov. Kristi Noem and the S.D.  Department of Tourism submitted an application for a special use permit for the 2022 Mount Rushmore fireworks celebration to the National Park Service (NPS).
“There truly is no better place to celebrate America’s birthday than Mount Rushmore, our nation’s enduring Shrine to Democracy,” said Gov. Noem. “Despite its arbitrary decision to cancel the 2021 fireworks celebration, the Biden Administration has an opportunity to work with us to celebrate next year and for the years to come.”

S. Rochford Road construction continues

The South Rochford Road is getting an upgrade, which will take a few weeks to complete. Meanwhile, traffic remains single lane on Rochford Road, controlled by stop signs. 
South Rochford Road remains open to the public and the Mickelson Trail also remains open.
So far, the precast structure has been installed and the riprap on the interior of the structure has been placed.
Looking two weeks ahead, plans are to finish replacing the block wall and to backfill the sides of the precast structure.

Pandemic-busters class offered in Keystone

A free class on healthy habits specifically designed to boost the immune system during COVID-19 is happening at Keystone Community Center Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. The Pandemic Busters class is hosted by Stacy Dean and Chris Miles, two medical missionaries who have been actively involved in the after school rec program at the Keystone Library. 

Lights out at Rushmore Forest Products

Rushmore Forest Products is preparing to officially shut down completely in Hill City after the announcement back in April of this year. The sawmill ownership attempted to keep the moulder running into 2022, but has since decided that the last day of operations will be Friday, Oct. 8.
