A lifetime of Sunrise Services: the lost years

This is part three of a seven-part series exploring the rich history of the Easter sunrise service at Mount Rushmore National Memorial as the tradition will celebrate its 75th year on April 9.
 
The 1960s was a decade of change in the U.S., and also for the area churches and the Easter Sunrise Service at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

Keystone deer proposal draws crowd

The Keystone Town Board had a packed house at its March 1 meeting, most there to discuss the proposed deer feeding ordinance.
Trustee Sandi McLain,  who voted in support of the ordinance at the last meeting, backpedaled a bit, concerned about how it would be enforced and the possibility of neighbors turning in neighbors. Trustee Matt Fullilove explained the sheriff’s office would be the one to enforce the ordinance just like any other town ordinance. 

Details of city-seniors agreement discussed

Approximately 25 people attended the March 2 meeting of the City of Hill City and the Hill City seniors. The meeting was to discuss the utilization agreement between the two entities for the Hill City Center.

Community Garden seed swap Saturday

The community garden is having its annual meeting and seed swap  Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. at Community Lutheran Church.
This annual meeting is “for anybody who would like to have a garden spot, or anybody who would like to help in the garden or anybody that would just like to learn about the garden,” said Jeff Schlukebier. 
People are encouraged but not required to bring seeds, clippings or seed catalogs to share. Ideas for the garden are always welcome as well. 

Love INC Heart of the Hills ministry growing

On Feb. 28 community members gathered at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church for the annual Love INC Vision Lunch. 
Love In the Name of Christ is a national organization that helps churches work together to assist the surrounding community and create a culture of service. Their mission is to “mobilize local churches to transform lives and communities in the Name of Christ.”

Dr. Seuss Carnival celebrates literacy

The annual Dr. Seuss Carnival and Literacy Night returned to Hill City Elementary School March 3. This event is sponsored by the school’s Parent Involvement Parent Teacher Organization group and run by its chair member, Rachelle Winter.
Despite the snowy weather 175 people attended the event, not counting volunteers. Elementary families crowded into the school and went from room to room playing carnival games. The children especially enjoyed seeing their friends, talking to teachers and winning fun prizes.

The 1950s Easter Sunrise Services at Mount Rushmore National Memorial could be called the decade of fame and celebrity.
An image of the first service of that decade was captured on film by C.H. Orelup and featured in Life Magazine. 

Legislators discuss session

Questions around taxes, voter and election integrity and banking took center stage as a District 30 legislative crackerbarrel this weekend at the Hill City Super 8. 
House  Representative Trish Ladner explained her co-sponsored  HB 1043 that was sent to the 41st legislative day, killing it for this session.
The bill would have offered anywhere from $300-$350 tax credit on a tax bill each year by means $100,000 value  property tax exemption from school levies.

Foundation distributes grants

The Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) handed out numerous grants at an awards ceremony party Feb. 24.
The awards went for mostly one time projects to organizations that directly impact the Hill City area. 
Despite being an ongoing event the  Black Hills Film Festival received $1,000 to bring back seminars and workshops to Hill City.
